Remix fees in the UK

Just wondering if there is a going rate for remixing a tune in the UK. You know like a bassline figure that people charge. We've been asked to remix a tune for a South African Label and they wanted to know what our fees would be, but seeing as I usually release toxic fumes from my arse rather than rekkids we didn't know what to say.

If all goes well and they release the record we could be superstars (or maybe just splash out on top of the range pot noodles).

If its going to be released id do it for free. Its a hobbie that just so happens to be the most addictive annoying fun thing you can do, no money should be needed.

But if you do it for free this time then next time it will be expected to be done for free

Think of it this way; how much can you knock off your price to convince him to go to you instead of an established engineer.

Well it's more a case of them liking a track we did and offering us some parts to remix another. If they like it they'll release it so we not really taking anyones place. They are a well established label in SA so they will pay us. It would just be nice to have a ballpark figure. Don't want to be greedy and we just want the exposure, but they were then ones who asked about money.

If it may be big, ask for royalties.

It's like that by Run DMC was remixed by Jason Nevins. He got a flat fee of about $2000 and the tune sold like Werther's original at a paedo's convention.

Anyways, make sure you cover your costs minimum inclusive of posh noodles, booze etc.

It's not usual for royalities to be paid on remixes.

Fair comment, I don't know personally, suppose it's down to what you are able to negotiate.

Its getting more and more common for royalties o be paid, what with labels not having big remix budgets its a good way to give the producer a kick back.

As for what to charge, it totally depends on the label, style and how many units it's expected to shift.
