CDJ 400's

So I used a pair of these in a bar on Sunday, not sure if I really like them...

Being used to 800's or 1000's I found the pitch control a bit of a bind not being as sensitive (is that the right word?) as the other models. I also didn't like the feel of them- one of them felt like the platter was coming loose (they're brand new- the bar only got them a month ago) and overall they just seemed cheap and easily breakable. The effects and stuff are good but being a relatively new DJ I don't really use these yet. The spinning red light on the platter looked rubbish too- made it look like a toy you get from Woolworths!!

Has anyone else used these? What are your thoughts?

0.5% I think? I have two 800's at home and that is alright I reckon. I use that the same increment on the 1000's usually anyway

To be honest I don't really notice a difference between the pitch control on the 800's and 1000's. Didn't even know you could alter it!! (Still very much new at this!)

I really noticed the difference on the 400's though.

Definitely. They just seem far more sturdy than the 400's and they're closer to the industry standard 1000's too. OK- the 400 has some effects on it but I see that as a bit of a gimmick really and the 800 has all your loop buttons on it etc anyway.

For the sake of £50 you may as well get the better model. I own 800 MK2's and would pick them any day over the 400's.

My best advice however is go to a store that sells both and try them both out and go with what you like best. Just take the extra £50 in case you want to go for the 800's!!!

The effects on the 400's are actually very good. I like the fact you can plug in a usb stick. The features are actually better than the 1000's, but obviously they are cheaper so you get what you pay for. Overall i think they are good value and its a real pity the 1000's don't have the same effects or the USB compatibility. They will be perfect for a home set up and are good value.

I have a 400 and I have no problems with it at all. I've used an 800, 1000 and the 400 is equally as good. IMO i'd say it was better than an 800, its got the same pitch as the 1000 so basically its more precise then an 800. As stated above you can plug USB into it and its cheaper. You can carry it anywhere you want with its light frame and it doesnt take up much space.

The effect on it are really good, a definate step up from the 100 and 200!

All in all if i'd got a choice between and old 800 and a new 400 i'd have the 400's everyday.

Agreed!
Love my 400's to bits, not as sturdy as a 1000 but for the price difference wouldn't anticipate it being this way. I've owned an 800 before & to me this is equal to it in build quality so maybe the ones in the bar were of a bad batch etc.
For the value & features the 400's are well worth it thumbsup

Are you sure?! My 800's are way more accurate than the 400's. The pitch is nowhere near the same and definitely not the same as a 1000! I've used all three and found the 400's to be the worst where that's concerned

I guess it's a preference thing at the end of the day- i'd take my 800's over the 400 any day. I just prefer the look and feel of them.

Nah- i've just done my research! Mine are 0.05% and the 400's are 0.02%.

I must have had them on the wrong setting when I used them then as they were rubbish- you don't really think about these things when you're nervous and about to start a set!

Doesn't change anything- still like my 800's!biggrin

i never bother with any of the equipment set upwhen i play. If its CDJ1000's happy days, but have also used denon, technics and vestax which have been ok, and also used stanton and numark ones which were.. um, not as good, but thats all they had, so you have to forget about the equipment and get on with it

Ive heard that theres a few probs with the usb side of things, heard that it crshes sometimes. Think im gonna get the 800's, they look a little more robust than the 400's. Are there any major effects that are on the 400's that arent on the 800's?

Check out youtube for the CDJ400 vids. That pretty much explains the effects on the 400's and they are worth having. The pitch it also 0.02% on the 400's against 0.05% on the 800's. Never had any probs with the usb stick - could it be a dodgy stick of the person you spoke to? The 400 hooks up to a PC via usb, but the manual is unclear on how to use this functionality. Supposed to act as midi controller etc

Yeah sorry, missed a 0 out, your right 0.05%.

I think its more down to the platter though, thats the thing that puts me off other CDJ's compared to the 800/1000. What is the one on the 400 like?

It's like the 200- it's tiny! It's got a bit of a jog wheel to it but is not as tactile as the 800/1000. The spinning red light on it also looks tacky and I found it a bit distracting!

Ah, that would seal the deal for me then, I borrowed a 200 from a shop to try out and hated it!

My 800's are one of the best things i've ever bought- I love them so much! (I didn't even buy any shoes for ages and ages so I could afford them and you know how much women love shoes!!) laughing

I couldn't stretch to a 4 channel Pioneer mixer so I got the DJM400 but it's still pretty neat!
