Well, as for the reson for my choice is that i tried the alesis M1 MKIIs and i tried the BX6's

Alesis had only 6.5" cones and even though they sounded great i still wanted that lower frequency definition.

The BX6's were no good at all for mixdowns i couldnt hear the frequencies i wanted to hear so i couldnt mixdown properly...I was back at square one.

So, all i was left with was the RP8's.... when i got the ok to send them back if they were no good, and they were a good price (ex-demo) i just got them.

Will be trying them out extensivly next week, so yep, a true review will be on the cards.

laughingbiggrinthumbsup Glad i made the right choice in the end as it def was a standoff with these and the Alesis...but then noticed the cone difference.

I did want to try the Prodipe Pro8's as they were EXACT to the RP8's in every way...and £100 cheaper!! ...and just to be different...haha.

But, i couldnt find a supplier in the UK, so didnt risk it.

I did quite a lot of investigation a few weeks back. Came down to a choice between the same two as Simon - the Alesis M1 MkII's and KRK Rokit RP8's.

Would have gone for the RP8's if I had the extra cash, but couldn't justify the fact that they're almost twice as much.

I'd be interested to hear of the difference between RP8's and BX8's as I've read good things about the latter. Keep us posted on your purchase Si as I'm also in the market for some new monitors.

Ha ha! Can't believe you've had 'em several days now Simon and you haven't even got 'em in yet!

I was like a kid in a sweet shop when I got my Alesis - had 'em up and running within about half an hour of them turning up!!

Plugged them all up, switched on the PC and i got a corrupt hard drive....SHIT! angry

But, played a DAT through them via my mixer and got to say i like the sound but the true test is when i come to mixdown via cubase and send out the tracks to my 'testers'. smile

...Ive just spent most of the time salvaging my 250Gb HD....only a couple of corrupted samples so happy with that smile, now the testing of the drive as i low level format it to see if its on the way out looking...and its a WD SATAII!! If i do have to replace it i think its def go for another Samsung Spinpoint if over 250gb thumbsup

laughing^ aww, all i could write at the time eyesup

anyway...

all up and working now smile

tested the speakers while throwing a basic track together and got to admit i love the sound! smilethumbsup

I left the settings on ther rear of the speakers set to default (odb) and just plugged them up using unbalanced Mono jacks from the mixer out. But will connect via TRS Balanced to XLR now ive tested them out and like them. thumbsup

First i played a DAT master through them of tracks i knew and played with the volume - all sounded flat but nice and round on the bass end, not too much and not too little biggrinthumbsup

I sat the speakers on the table top but still on:

4 small foam pads > steel plate > 4x spikes > 1/4 steel plate > Table top

since the bass ports are on the front i didnt get the usual bass problems.

speakers were set to head hight...tweeters near ear level.

The test tracks is HERE: http://www.frozenuk.com/Music/Testtrack.mp3 (The track has not been arranged or finished as it was a quick test but still may work on it if its worth it) smile

Anyway: Great speakers and they sound better than the Alesis i must say. The BX5's had clarity but no bass, and great now to go from passives to actives thumbsup I can leave them switched-on on the back, when i power up i dont get a thump or get any noise when switching off (I turn down the mixer before i do this though)

and if it matters at all, they are made from shiny plastic rather than wood! smile

I have tried Genlecs and only like the extra large ones love... hate the sound of the smaller ones...and a Sub is out of the question for this size of room.

Looks nice Si.

Those monitors have a really nice open sound to them.  Plenty of seperation between the sounds for mixing down and a nice warmth to them.   Hope you're happy with em in the long run.
