The smaller the  cone the less bass you have, but much the same mid-range and highs. If you want to make dance music then the KRK RP8's would be the go as you need the sub frequencies

Yep, dont get anything smaller than an 8" cone for serious mixing down of tracks.

Its ok though if you intend in getting a decent Sub with it and you are going to EQ your room, but a small room will do with just 8" cones. smile

yeah def true - are the RP5's too weak then? cos bigger would be better but maybe they suffice, they only R3k so i could get a decent s/c for around R1.5k aswell for the same price as the RP6's, RP8's are quite a bit more so wanna make sure... thumbsup

I wouldn't say you can rule out all speakers with smaller than 8" drivers. I get pretty decent mixes out of my BM6as and they're only 6".

Never tried them? So cant say. All depends on the frequency range too....and the box. Just that the ones i have tried werent good enough.

Music Style loads of stuff.

surely its the frequency range of the speaker combined with the room size and accoustics, not the size of the cone that will get good mixdown results.

ive got bx8's but after hearing some bm5a's this weekend i know i'd be better with them.

Dyns use a 6.9 inch one piece driver with an aluminium voice coil so you get better performance than most 8 inch drivers outta them wink

I knew id be eating my own words...lol

Ye, well, again, its all down to the individual and what they like in the end.

Scrap all i said about the cones...prob was a bit of a stupid statement uhohlaughing

all i can say is that i have found a great speaker for the room i have it in thumbsup

One thing that finally blew me away is that i went round to a mates house last night and he has a studio setup (ex producer to Steve Thomas - Tripoli) and all he has is a pair of JBL control 1's...and oh my f'kin god they sounded awsome for the size!!!! looking

I thought he had a Sub but no, it was just them!! uhoh

The sound was clean, bright and rounded bass, i know the real lows wrernt there but listening to some well produced B&B + Breaks...even some Hard house and it sounded awsome. Wouldnt mind a pair now just as extra reference!! They even sounded fatter than the Yamaha NS10m's i have!! looking

Yeah, but yours are dynaudios!! They are beautiful speakers. I'd give my right testicle for a pair. (i've reserved my left testicle for someone who wants to swap it for a virus Ti).

Ah... dont get me wrong, i DIDNT like them as i had the very shit Control 5's for a few years....ooooohhh they were soooo shit! thumbsdown

But i was pleasantly surprised with the Control ones!!

One thing IS puzzling me and thats the frequency ranges rolleyes they seem all over the place on different sites.

I know there are three different ones and they are the originals, the new PRO's and the Xtreame.

One thing is the originals have a printed Frequency range of 50Hz - 20Khz as on the site i got the above details from but the newer ones only go fron 70hz which is crap. Is that site right in saying the originals are 50hz as the JBL site doesnt help frown

We all should have speakers like this is were making tracks for radio or personal playback as they show you how they would sound on smaller systems...especially PC speakers!!

Most people wont be playing your tracks on big club systems, they will be listening at home on their bookshelf speakers, ipods and PC's.

Producing dance music would primarily be mixed for a club as this is your starting point but also it should be mixed for smaller speakers, especially for PC's as a lot of showcases will be from people on PC's or your myspace page. smile
