A bootleg nowadays IMO is a full (5min+) remix passed around at 192kbps+.

If you want to make it so bad then just make it. If you want to play it in your DJ sets then do it. The problem is when you decide to pass it to a friend or post it online for feedback.

If you play a cover live then you are ok. If you record your own version of a cover and distribute it on a webforum without the original artist's permission then you're looking for trouble (or if it's a REALLY good remix, publicitysmile)

I'm not sure about the ethics ofr doing it and then putting it up for free download (although I see the reasoning) but the original artist may lose out on sales if someone just thinks they will have the free version(all depends how good it is I guess - but a lot of old stuff is now up for MP3 sale and a booty may harm those sales however small they may be).

I think if you as a dj do it for yourself and maybe give it to a few of your mates to play I really don't see the harm. Courtesy says you should give the original artist a copy if they are still about - whether the like it or not is another matter lol.

But then look at PAS - Higher, Riggsy & Farrell's - Kick It and so on...  All got officially released off the back of some booty action.

A lot of people moan about booties but everyone hasn't been around in the scene since day dot in hard house  so the tunes just sound fresh to them anyway. For those that have been around some will hate and some will love fresh interpretations on tunes. I guess its all about moderation.

butcher did an official one adam.

Maybe, but judging by that thread and his responce, it doesnt seem like it was planned and was signed because it was done and circulating so Jay signed it.

Haven't both Bourne and Dom made bootlegs themselves anyway?  Can't see them being too hurt that a couple of their ancient tracks are still liked enough to spend time updating

Oh, and don't forget the Special G remix of 9bar.... Superfast Oz said his only problem was that Graeme never sent him a copy laughing

I think people should still make bootlegs as they can be really good but just dont stick it in peoples faces by sticking them up 4 free download. Asking the original artist would be the best thing to do but lets face it your gonna do it with or without the concent of the original artist. laughing

you didn't do too badly with the old booties did you Tom. wasn't that C series release your first wax?

Rudi - i can't see why it would be a big issue in a scene that relies on recycled sounds, permission or not.

guess it's still polite to ask though

looks like i'll just do it and use it in some mix's and maybe pass it on to a few mates who might want it beer

really not gonna bother the artists for permission on an 8year old track

As longs as you're not going to sell it or make it freely available I'd just get on and do it.

Particularly with an older track I can't see anyone really being that bothered. Maybe sending the original artist a copy of the bootleg when its done would be courteous but I definitely don't see any need to get permission first.

Fuckin hell I can't believe how many people are being so uptight in this thread about a couple of bootlegs....that might actually turn out to be shithot tracks.

It would be a different story if Rudi would have just done them anyway then posted them for feedback and turned out to be be mint tracks, or even better than the other versions!

A lot of top producers off this board have made booties in their time and got away with it.

In a scene this small you'd have thought a couple of booties of really old tracks wouldn't do any harm at all really.

IMO do the booties, keep them yourself but send the original artists etc a copy (Dom/Oz/Mark etc) you never know what might come of it if it is good....thumbsup

As a man thats done two bootlegs I'm with both Mr Maddox and Dave on this one. Fine to do them, great to put them in your sets, I'd even say fine to put them on mixes. But putting them up for free isn't fair I'd say.

I like my remix of Dreamer, someone might hear it and then go and purchase the original because mine's not available, which is great! If mine were freely available (not saying bigging it up or anything like saying its great etc) they then may not bother to purchase the original, which isn't fair on the original artists.

I also like the one about sending the original artists the bootleg. I've tried that with both of mine but didn't get anywhere. Might try again with one of mine actually.

Music Style !! HARD !!
And all the people saying bootlegs are wrong have never bought one in the past because of their principles yawn

Bootlegs are fine so long as you don't dish them out free. Covers version that don't use any samples don't even require permission but do require you to pay royalty fees.
