Haha hmm. Don't know if I could actually sit down and write out how to make grungy mess.

Nah that was true. Since most are from sample packs you don't really need to compress them as such. Just love that crunchy punchy sound, so overdrive everything. Only really use compressors for vocals. Or if I've stolen a riff from somewhere and I want it to stand out without destroying the sound of it.

Tempted to buy this, but had bag experiences with sample packs from "The sIte we Do not speak of" i.e. I pay £15 for a pack full of shite I never end up using.

Tempted to get this for the funky techno loops though, been having a stab at producing some of my own funky looped techno tracks lately but seem to be getting nowhere. Could give me a few decent ideas this pack.

EDIT: Couldn't resist, had to purchase. Fair play Paul, this is actually a very well put together pack and one I will be turning to for some time. thumbsup

wicked!

As you say, some packs are hit and miss. In the past I've had the misfortune to pay £50-60 for sample CD's to find that only a handful of loops or fx were useable. I haven't bought one for years so I tried to fill this pack with all the bits and bobs that would be useful to write a track from scratch without having to search for the 'useful' samples.

glad you like it - cheers for the positive feedbacksmile

No worries Paul, credit where credit's due. thumbsup

I know what you mean about sample CD's, you usually get a ton of crap that is completely unusable so you end up paying over the odds for a handful of decent samples (and that's if you're lucky).

For any future packs I'd say kick-less percussion loops would be what I'd be looking for. I've got gigabytes of one-shot samples on my hard drive but very few decent loops. As I mainly use Ableton Live 7 now (for production and DJ'ing) loops are incredibly useful for both live sets as well as spicing up my own productions.

this is why over the years i collected my own and stuck with it as it has grown.

my main sample collection is about 12Gb, already too much to actually go through, any more and you just would never get through it.

I also have 5Gb of just acapellas, again, more than enough to actually go through, chop up and totally change to use on my own projects.

In theory you really dont need that many samples, you just need to be creative with the ones that actually work. If you find a kick or bass that works well, you dont need to change it unless you change your genre. you also only need a handful of 'fill in' loops too, then just add in your own single sample hits from known drum machines or softsynths.

I now find that i am using the softsynths more than samples where the only samples are vocals. Most softsynths made for dance now include those great bit stab sounds or harsh synth if you look for them, and are of a better quality and more virsitile than any sample ever was.

The best thing i have within my own sample library isnt the stabs or sounds but the actual past collection of remix parts from top artists and record labels, great for getting the creative juices going again when you hit that creative mental block. smile

artist veterans like Paul have these collections, especially as their remix discography grows thumbsup

nice one. I think a couple of packs I'm working on will be 100% loops, so should keep a few people happy for a while!

i usually gate the reverbs by hand - ie bounce the reverb and then chop the end off or use my hardware gated reverbs.

the main reason I gate reverbs is to stop the mix getting messy. for instance I can add a massive reverb to the clap and by cutting off the tail of the reverb it stops that from messing with the next beat. on the demo you can hear this mostly in the first few bars, where the snare reverb is gated so that it stops before the next kick. this makes the snare sound big but doesn't overpower the kick.

I also use reverbs to create ghost rhythms by passing a loop through and only using the reverb. If you add this to another loop it can make the mix sound bigger without getting too messy and you can also do cool things like chopping up the reverb!love

Purchased this today, can't wait to open it later. nice one paul smile

hey guys - quick q about sample packs....????

I've noticed that a lot of these packs include bass line loops, synth arps and sequences etc... do any of you use them?

Personally I've never found them useful but I'd be interested to know if anyone else does. thumbsupthumbsdown?

Don't really use them, much prefer single note long samples or multi sampled that I can boot into my own sampler and make my own lines.

Percussion, loops, single shot FX are most useful. thumbsup

Music Style loads of stuff.

yeah, you dont really use bassline loops as they are pretty obvious when you've just slapped it in there.

sample packs should be drums, loops and fx noises. arps and stuff are easy to do on your own with synths.

personally i use the perc shots in packs to try and recreate the loops in the packs. backwards way but i find it interesting to see how the loops are made rather than just slap them in there whole.

personally i wouldn't bother with kick samples most people already have more than they will ever use, percussion hits are all good, multi-samples & fx would be a big selling point to me

also usable loops are all good, i tend to find that with most of the samples cd's/packs they have 100's of loops but only 10 or 20 that are usable most are over produced or to cluttered to layer

and last but not least value for money, most of those sample packs on the site that we dare not mention are crap and a total waste of money
