yeah i know mate others have said the same, thing is i have a laptop and a desktop and i dont wanna commit to a s/c for either as i use both for production so i would prefer the portability.

do u reckon this will work: I produce on the laptop with headphones and the on-board soundcard and use the desktop with studio s/c & monitors for mixdown/mastering? or will i need the studio card for production? i'm using reason but will want to rewire with cubase and use vst's in future thumbsup

Chalk and cheese mate.

I've had skeptical friends before, some of whom were even using M-audio cards.  Everytime I've taken the Motu 896 to their house and plugged it in their monitors have come to life and they just sit their with stunned looks on their face.

Get the best firewire soundcard you can possibly afford.  In today's digital world, sound card and monitors are your two most important purchases.

i reckon i'm gonna leave the laptop standard and use it for production but do all mastering/mixdown on the desktop with a pci soundcard. the laptop will be used for headphone production at work etc anyway - my only problem is using vst's - will i NEED a studio soundcard for some of the processing or does it not matter? i'm currently only running reason really so i dont see a problem... ?

edit: this soundcard or this soundcard or what u recommend?

thanks beer

ahh reet , then the alesis m1 active mk2's are a safe bet then wink also check out the echo audiofire cards  i was tempted but went for the edirol fa 101 , this is a great card but probably too many ports for you , also you can get a firewire adapter for your laptop (pcmcia e), my lappy does not have firewire so will be forking out for one of these soon, think you can get them on ebay for lilltle moneys , im yet to test one my self so dont take my word , actually is any one using one of these firewire pcmcia express cards , you have a choice with 400 and 800 , im sure the 800 is best to get but is 400 enough , excuse the hijack wink

No real need to avoid USB if you're only looking at an interface with a relatively small number of channels and you're not going to be using super-high sample rates.

I use a USB interface for all my live stuff and it's solid as a rock.
On a PC you're more likely to encounter issues with FW than USB due to the various flaky chipsets a lot of motherboards have.

Very useful advice Paul. Thanks. I'm kinda pulling my hair out as to whether I should or should not get the MOTU 828 Mk2 USB interface. I've used the Firewire one before when I created live DJing software with MAX/MSP, but that was with a Mac and I now run an AMD X2. I like that it can stand-alone as a mixer, the sample rates are more than i think i'll need, all analogue inputs and outputs are independent (including the headphone out), and it has great metering on the front. But this  USB issue worries me. If I were running all the analogue ins and outs (using XP) do you think it would work (at 16-bit, 44.1KHz) glitch free?
