i have an asus a8n-e which has a 939 socket and when i look on the ccl online store i cant find out if there is a dual core processor which has a 939 socket

so does this mean i will nedd a new motherboard if i want a dual core processor?

Is this your mobo? if so click on specifications tab. Look under cpu type: Athlon 64 X2 / Athlon 64 FX / Athlon 64

Socket 939 is AMD's old one, thats probably why you cant find it in the shops. I have a feeling you may find yourself paying more for a 939 cpu than the equivelent AM2 (which is the newer AMD socket) but have a look around.

Try and get something higher than 4200+ if you can, but you should notice a big difference between an x2 cpu and a single core cpu for making music with how many vst's you can open - I went from a sempron to a x2 3800+ and the difference was huge (but in all fairness, about the same difference between the 3800x2 and then upgrading to an intel q6600) if you can save the cash its worth investing in an intel quad core (but your probably looking at £175 for a Q6600 and a decent mobo)

There are a few 939 x2 cpu's on ebay at the moment, buy it now ranges from about £60 for a 3800 x2 to £90 for a 4600 x 2, which I dont think is amazing value for money (a socket am2 6000x2 is £70 in the shops) personally I would try and look at upgrading the mobo to an intel socket 775 if you can save the cash, you will notice a massive difference

(also if your mobo dies in the future you may end up having to upgrade them both anyway as I reckon 939 stuff will become increasingly hard to get hold of)

I looked into this a little bit earlier. Some websites suggest that this mobo will support X2 and some dont. I couldnt get a hold of manual for this mobo. If you have one look through it for your answer. thumbsup

If it does support Athlon 64 X2 I would recommend anything over X2 6000+

6400+ is not that expensive.

Also, check what Manufacturing Tech your mobo has. CPU-Z will tell you this.thumbsup

Get an intel...and change your motherboard.

AMD's are too far behind, even their dual cores.

Get a 775 Socket MB and a dual processor like the E6750, you can then upgrade later to a quad with the same board too. And use top memory. DDR2.

get a reasonably cheap £50-60 intel 775 socket motherboard and a q6600 quad core cpu :o) the best value for money imo
