I know some of you might read this and just brush it off but if you are having problems with viruses and malware/spyware maybe its time to move on. I installed ubuntu few weeks ago (dual boot) and now im about to remove windows xp forever. Thanks to NoMiS ChaV I was able to get everything running. Give it a try and stick with it for few weeks. Its not as hard as it seems and you dont need to learn any command lines. thumbsup

I have used windows since windows 95 and to be honest im not going back to it.

Once again thank you very much Jake. You are the best, mate. thumbsup

You did that for yourself mate. I may have intro'd you but you dealt with the give up and try again thing yourself.idea As did I mate, I cant remember how many times I purged my system of Linux cuz I was pissed at something that rage wouldnt allow me to see the answer too.laughing The credit is your own mate, alot of people give up at the first hurdle and only because they'd rather the problems they know.laughing

Linux is the ultimate OS. Unless you are a hardcore gamer or in the book/printing industry. Everything else can be done using Linux just as well and better than MS can. And VM's are getting better and better so if you have a windows app that you cant do without you can still use it through MS Virtual Machine. I love having XP running in a window on my Ubuntu desktop.

All those movies where the CIA/FBI agents are on mad looking super computers are running Linux in one form or another.laughing

BTW, with probs with Blender and Compiz: In System Tools there is a Compiz icon. Start it up and it will land in your top right. Right click before opening Blender and in the Window Manager bit select Metacity. When your done with blender you can select Compiz again. Best of both.thumbsup

Until it can run Adobe applications natively, it's useless to me. Same applies to any creative application frankly, even Blender isn't a good enough alternative for me to switch from Maya.

All our severs are UNIX boxes obviously, but we use FreeBSD which is still the best server OS out there, bar none.

It won't be too much longer untill the major app/game producers will create native environments for Linux. Obviously not open sauce but they will code their softs for us soon enough. Linux is getting too big now to be ignored. The more GUI freindly it gets the more people will magnetize to it. Already the whole scholastic setup in swathes of Spain and India and more are making it a part of the edu system(Edubuntu(exams too)).

Oh absolutely, it's inevitable that they do, but until then, it's just not an option for a lot of people.

It's getting big, but it's still got a lot of ground to make up, the average joe is still not going to get Linux no matter how good it is. The marketing team need to do better frankly, it's still looked upon as a geek OS, better suited to computer nerds. Not for mums and dads who want to check their email and surf the web. Obviously it's suitable for that, but no-one knows that and frankly, no-one is going to bother trying. They'll just get a Mac if they want to swap, it's an easier and more exciting option, mainly based on incredible marketing thumbsup

Top link on this page mate, 1.9: http://ultimateedition.info/">http://ultimateedition.info/ x86 and x64. thumbsup

This is Ubuntu Ultimate Edition and has just about everything you need pre-installed so its a complete system and the best distro to start out with, imo. They will both run live from the disk but be aware that it runs considerably slower from the live disk. You will have to install it to see it run properly and its dead easy to install and have a dual boot system running.thumbsup

I've had a dual boot laptop for just over a year now.  Adobe CS3 works, running in linux from the windows installation. With some tweaks, it's faster than when I load it in windows. Only one install does both sides.  Ableton works, etc. etc.  All but the newest windows games will fire up on the first shot. There are very few programs you can't get going with a little elbow grease.  And for those that don't, My windows boot is under 6 seconds (a whole different beast when it never talks to the net. )

One thing that I really really REALLY love about Ubuntu is that you can boot into the live cd and run the installation from there, while you're browsing the net or listening to tunes or whatever... Well coolsupercool

I work with some of the best IT security teams in the world, and it is a common belief between them that Linux is a much less secure operating system than Windows.

This is one of the reasons IBM started flogging off rights to Red Hat for next to nothing.

Whilst that isnt likely to affect you in the short term, as soon as enough people start using Linux, the wankers who write the malware etc, will soon start to target them.  A long time ago these "hackers" used to be against large corporations like Microsoft and would target its users in the hope of preventing them from using their software, nowadays its very different, they dont give a fuck what you use, they just want your personal details, credit card details etc, and even just to destroy your hardware.

Linux will not save you from this.

Whilst I use pretty much use every operating system on a daily basis, and do indeed quite like Linux, im also quite realistic about its practical use.  If you just use you pc for surfing, then its great, but when you start trying to use your machine for certain software applications and games, then you start to struggle in Linux.

The graphics drivers in virtual machines are pretty poor.  You wont be able to run games for example.

No but CS3 and most other apps will run just fine. Virtualbox can use 128mb of video memory which is fine for most things, other than games as you say.

You can run almost any game in WINE though... will only be a couple weeks before CS3 works in WINE: they're workin on it. thumbsup Not perfect, but that's why the dual boot.
