Some programs are popular because they're the best for the job. Windows is popular because they were lucky enough to corner the market at the the right time and getting the whole world to change its OS is a monumental task.
Ableton on the other hand is popular because it's the best Live Performance tool on the market.
Photoshop is popular because it's probably the best photo editing package on the market.

You seem to take some sort of pride in running Linux because it's userbase is so small and you must be in some sort of club of people who really know their shit and everyone else is thick. There are even better clubs, Solaris has a smaller userbase than Linux. Imagine how smart you'd be running that.
Some people just want a stable machine to run their shit from. With OSX getting easier and easier to run on regular PCs and not overpriced white boxes I foresee Linux being used less and less. Linux was the traditional stop off for those wanting out of microsoft but wouldnt pay for a Mac. Take price out the equation and more will turn to OSX I reckon.
