Finished both of em now. I need full download speed for the next few hours so I'll upload em later. The problem with one of them was, as you said, the beat structure. The kick drum started half-way through a bar which in Ableton is a no no as clips are triggered at the ends of the bars. All I did was warp it as normal then chopped half a bar out from somewhere where you couldn't really notice.

The other track (Redemption) warped fine, took me about 1 minute. I think some people get threw by long intros. There's no need to warp every 32 beats or however some people do it. Lay down the first warp marker and if it has a 2 minute intro locate the first beat and warp that. The rest of the track slotted right in then. I moved about 3 other markers between the first kick and the last and only by very small amounts.

Hey thanks Dot, really appreciate your help with those! Yeah it's a learning curve really. The more I do, the more I'll figure out little tricks. I've warped about 200 of my tracks so far and plenty more to go yet, so I'm sure I will pick it up soon enough. Seeing your warp markers will help loads though Dot, thanks again!

thinking about maxing the credit card on a 4d and ableton biggrin

Jon - How hard is it keeping ableton in sync with normal decks/cdj's? -  Probably would only do one or the other but just wondered if it possible to integrate the two.

Yeah it's possible, I've just about figured it out. The 4D sends a midi clock signal to ableton but there is a delay. You can set ableton to work with the delay to keep sync. Really though, the best method I've found is to beat match CD's into ableton. So if you start using ableton, switching to CD's is piss easy. The reverse is a bit more tricky because ableton syncs in bars. I've figured out that the first time I wanna mix ableton into CD"s, I have to have the global clock stopped and set to the first beat. Then I take off the global quantisation and start like a CD deck, then nudge it in sync. Once it's in, keep ableton running with a loop of some sort and it will stay locked throughout. It's pretty easy really. Oh and the 4D, I've just started using the dual layer midi function now, it's amazing! At the flick of a switch, I have double the amount of midi controls available to me! Can't recommend one enough!

yeah may see if I can return it - although it is really good with traktor.  There seems to be so much more that you can do with ableton though.  If I can't return it its no biggie, would probably keep the vci for traktor and just use the 4d with ableton.

Will probably buy ableton first and map the vci-100 and have a good play about then get a 4D in a few months.

like you said, traktor is good for more traditional style of mixing i.e beatmatching manually etc, where as ableton seems to allow more creativity with loops & fx.  Need to win the euromillions this Fridaylaughing

It's an expensive hobby for sure. Definitely buy ableton and have a really great play around with it before commiting yourself to buying a 4D.

jon, how do you map midi to select between tracks left and right?? I have managed to set up a control for scene selection.  Want to be able to highlight a clip for the loop function.

Also on your videos in the other thread, you said you use the bottom lightpipe button for playing tracks.  Do you have these assigned to individual slots e.g scene 1-track1, scene 1-track2.....

Only playing with the demo as its not coming until tomorrow now, but I can already tell I am gonna have some fun with this love

Have you got the 4D already?

I have scene selection assigned to a continuous rotary encoder. That just moves the scene up or down. When you press the relevant play button, it'll play on that line if that makes sense? Oh and you can key map say numbers 1 and 2 to tracks left or right. Enter Key map mode, click on audio ch1 then press number 1 on the keypad, come out of Key map mode. Then everytime you press number 1, you'll see the plugins for channel 1.

Start a tune playing, enter midi map mode, click on the clip that's counting down the tune, then assign that to a button of some sort, exit map mode. Then everytime you play a tune, you can press that button to show the clips waveform.

To set a loop function, have the clip waveform visible. Enter map mode, click the loop on / off in the clip, assign to a button. Then assign the start set point and end set point to 2 other buttons, exit map mode.

On the 4D, you can set up the lightpipes to toggle on or off or stay perminantly on. Mine turn on and off. I've mapped those to the scene play command, not the individual clip play button. You know, next to the clip view you've assigned. It's tough to explain. Add me to MSN if you like mate, jondaniels at sky dot com.

What effects are you all using and how are you using them? I keep changing my setup so I'm forever changing them but I think I'll use mostly the Fade 2 Gray, Superlooper, Washed Out and the Flanger.

Fade 2 Gray should be in audio effects > Perfomance and DJ > Fade 2 Gray. The other two are downloads. Go here and download all these extra effect racks: http://www.abletonlivedj.com/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=31&func=select&id=6

How do you guys organise your tracks for DJing with Live.  I find the browser isn't very DJ friendly.

At the moment I am making playlists in iTunes which are like a virtual record box e.g house playlist has all my house tunes etc, then I drag them into the session view from iTunes.

Also a good tip for I am using for warping is to make a midi tracks of a kick & hi hat which I loop along when warping instead of the metronome.  Finding it more accurate that way, as thats what i'm used to hearing when djing.

You could use the Session View slots as your record box. If you have a rough idea of what you want to play then drag them to the slots. Then when you want to play one drag it to the top slot and trigger it. Or if you're lucky to have an APC40 you can leave them where they are and trigger them by moving the clip launch buttons to where they are.

I always warp against a kickdrum as well. Just a simple kick loop on an audio track.
