Computer time!!

I had to re-install XP this week onto my desktop pc, as windows wouldn't boot up.

It seems ok, got XP up and running again,and its fine until i go on the internet.

Its got Internet Explorer 6 as standard.Its ok on the net,but when i click the cross to close the window its lock the whole pc up Only clicking cross when in the net though,its fine as normal my computer window or whatever.

I tried upgrading to I.E.8 and that crashed with a missing DLL file or something

Anyway i can survive by just minimising and closing down i guess.

Just wondered if anyone had this issue with XP and how they got around it plz

Scandisk - It made no difference

I'm in software supp not hardware,and i know you lot know a lot more about this sort of thing than me.

It might be for some weird reason i'll have to re-install XP again sometime ,maybe that'll help.All not end of world,until the HDD goes,then its start to get more of a problem

I may try and get firefox or some other browser and see if that helps.

Well, if you're in s/w support you should be able to fix it cos it sounds like s/w to me.

 

Try doing a repsair install.

Did you install from the BIOS(clean install) or did you install from the desktop?

Have you installed all of the drivers?
Open Control Panel > Sytem > Hardware > Device Manager. Any question marks in there?

Did you use a genuine XP install disk and if not then try burning the XP image to disk again but do it at the lowest speed possible this time.

there pretty much all disposable if you want them to be, you just throw them away.

 As far as i know i've done all the drivers that came on a disk with the motherboard.
 
 I just put the XP disc in bootup and pressed any key to boot of cd,and then just re-installed windows.

 I looked for the ? marks,only on a USB port,which doesn't matter.


 I have a feeling its probably a driver issue as can't seem to get higher than 1024 x 860 on 32 BIT graphics card.
 I'll have to look at the drivers, cheers.

System restore won't do zip i wouldn't have thought as i installed Windows from scratch would it?? I'll have a look.

  Tried getting the 2 & 3 and it should said as long as Windows Update is done,all good.So i did that,and its no better.

  I have a feeling it something to do with the graphics card,as screen res won't go higher than 1024 x 960 on 32 BIT,and i'm sure it use too??

 Just had a thought actually when i installed the SKY BROADBAND of the disc,it did its check bit at end and failed,however it still went online.I'm sure it did this though on last copy of XP and it still worked fine on the net.

Not sure if anyone mentioned system restore - I mentioned repair install. When windows first loads it uses the generic graphics drivers for windows which will only go to low res. Shouldn't cause Internet Explorer to lock up though - that's the only thing that's causing the lock up right?

If you think it may be the graphics drivers you've since installed try to install them again.

That's a clean install.

Sky broadband disc has always been a piece of shit. You don't need it to set Sky bb up.

Clean install as in you installed XP to a freshly created and formatted partition having deleted the previous partition/s.

Make sure you have the graphics card drivers installed.

If you cant figure out the name of your card then download a program called Everest, it will list all of the components in your machine and link you to the manufacturers websites so you can find the drivers. It will also give you all the running temps of your CPU, GPU etc. Very usefull little app. You could also try using Driver Genius, it will scan your machine and download the drivers for you.

Oh I see, kinda like anythging else you can think of, ever, in the whole wide world then.
