well ive decided im going to try and pick up ableton (from total scratch) just as a hobbie to start with then maybe for wrting riffs, then go from there. But im a 100% total novice (besides being in the studio with engineers etc - where ive pickjed up 1 or 2 things). Basically where are the best tutorials, places to read up on how to pick things up??

Any any other good website etc that can have good insights/tips etc to novice starters.

Cheersthumbsup

Hi Gaz,

I'm in exactly the same boat. Been slowly, patiently building up my kit, building a PC etc and now I'm about to take the plunge. Would be interested in knowing what kit you're using for starters.

headphones and a laptop is all im starting with mate, going to see if i can pick up the basics before i start splashing out, will get VST's etc as i see fit, but speaking to a few people before i took the plunge they said try and pick up the basics etc as i might not grasp it straight away. No point spending the money on kit i dont know how to use.

Which version have you gone for?

Still not sure whether to go for Lite first, then upgrade later, or to just go with the full version.

I got some good tutorials with one of the producer magazines. I'll check to see which one when I get home.

try this first gaz, theres 3 video's and it seems pretty straight forward. im been using FL9 on and off but going to upgrade my machine this year and get stuck in.

also, grab some remix packs and try to make your own or even replicate the original, it will give you and idea of how things go.thumbsup

Ableton is awesome, it's all I use for my production, I know my way around cubase and logic but ableton is so much nicer to use and can get things down alot faster!

For vst's I would say get yourself a copy of sylenth and learn that as it sounds great and isn't a cpu hog if you are only using a laptop.thumbsup

Check out the Ableton Forums, or even on serious sounds they have a small section on ableton with noobie questions, iv been using it since dec, was using fl for about 2 yrs but the transition to ableton has been sweet.  The Computer Music guide to ableton is worth picking.

nice one, i've got ableton live, but havent spent much time with it as i am unsure what program to try and start learning between ableton, cubase and reason.

i'll keep my eyes open in hope of seeing some tips from you and i'll trying learn the program too. i've got an akai mpc49 that came with ableton lite version too, but i'm not sure if i can get the best out of it with hard house? i need to have a play when i've got a bit of time.

agreed ! Nick Greek boy showed me Ableton when i was using Cubase and i'm full on with this at the minute, as said before, lets you get stuff done efficiently, it's all about drag and drop!! smile hopefully live 9 will bring dual screens as it will be all there!! the built in suite tools/instruments are immense!! each to their own tho smile
