Out of curiosity, Is it really so that the U.S invented "Hard House", deriving from Chicago (where house music was invented) then the UK caught on? or was it vice versa?

i found a source that says Hard House emerged at the same time in the U.S and UK during the mid 90s. so i take it that the sound before that was just house?

It was probably alot more influenced by the Trance/Hard Trance that was coming out of Germany around 93/94 than anything being imported from the US.

The hard house sound as we know it today originated from Trade, around 93 - 94 the trade DJ's played a of nu-enegry type tracks (think reactivate 10) with a mix of what was then know as hard-bag. These two sounds merged and got a lot tougher around 95, if you went to Trade in 95 you would have heard a type of music that wasn't really played anywhere else - there wasn't a name for it back then, it was just called "Trade music". Then some one named it hard house, and the rest is history.

A typical hard-bag record:

Hard house is portrayed pretty well

"Pretty interchangeable with Nu-NRG, except where Nu-NRG is hard and driving every once in awhile, Stupid House (better known as UK Hard House for reasons unknown as it sounds neither hard nor housey) is just retarded. It's probably the offbeat bass stabs that lend credence to its defining 'stupid' sound. And the horn fanfares, making it sound like silly circus music. And the crowd cheering samples, which make it seem cheap and gimmicky. But where other party music (Happy Hardcore, Eurodance) has a self-aware, tongue-in-cheek affability, Stupid House here legitimately tries to pass itself off as something serious and genuine. Like actual contentious music. A chip-on-its-shoulder, more-hardcore-than-thou ethos, something so laughably ridiculous even Gabber House looks cooler in comparison. Pretending to be what it's not makes this whole genre fraudulent and insulting to those who just want to have a good time. And that's before you see how the kids dance to it. Stupid House is the bargain bin of electronic music. It also encompasses those signature-melody tracks that are always packaged in 'BEST CLUB ANTHEMS EVER' compilations, like The Launch, which are the musical equivalent of junk food"

Might have been first to use the term "officially" yes. Kavanagh has also said Steve Thomas first used it though so I don't know. What I do know is the term wasn't really used until Kavanagh took over the reviews section in Muzik magazine and he changed the page title from 'Hardbag' to 'Hard House'.

These days, you're going to get lots of people saying different things about the origins of it because everyone has the Internet now and everybody "knows everything". I tend to listen to the people who were around while it was happening.

Yes, I understand that and I'd be quite happy for it all to be called rave or techno or whatever too. The problem is it has been labelled now and unfortunately that labelling can't be undone. I was commenting on that labelling. I wasn't saying it was right or wrong.

No offence taken. It's just forum jousting isn't it. smile

It has gone abit over the top these days I agree but tbh genre labeling is needed for club nights to an extent because you wouldnt want to turn up to a hard dance night expecting them to play hard house and they end banging out hard style and german trance...

Right from the bat when house music kicked off in the 80s and 90s they grew a whole list of sub genres for it, house was just a roll of the toungue from the famous Chicago 'Warehouse' and its not much different today except alot more different styles of dance music each with thier own lists of sub genres...

I've not read all these posts but I have just asked a similar question on tidy's board about the artists that created hard house cos im interested in collecting music from that time. obviously Tony De Vit (RIP) had a massive influence on the sound but I read somewhere that he was influenced by Baby Doc a lot.

that's what i thought too...they had hard house in the early 90s but of course it lead to gabber and then the off shoot to hardstyle...but i think hard house from the U.S and Holland never had any influence over each other including the UK. though i'm wondering if the hard house in the early 90's U.S, influenced the dutch since they sounded the same in stucture (that boinga boinga boinga kick on every beat and bleeep bleep bleep sound)...?

the best answer for this question for now might be, they originated in three places...not just the UK.

I think you're reading into it too much, hard house is just a sound that developed out of djs playing a range of different styles mashed together.

I highly doubt the US sound had any influence on the dutch / uk sound though
