Got a singer in this weekend

And I am working on a sample pack of vocals to put up for download/sale.  Having aquired other 'professional' sample packs of vocals i've been disappointed with a lot of the content - most are very cheesy, very generic type stuff. Only managed to use a few samples from them and some are not exactly cheap...

So - the singer i have this weekend has a fantastic soulful type voice.  Can hear her in action on the last track i did with her - www.reverbnation.com/hinotestudios under Morgan Distortion

What i was wondering was if anyone had any requests or ideas - either one shot samples or to re-sing acapellas for use in bootlegs or one liners that she can sing in a variety of different ways/keys/tempos.  Anything really that you think might be useable in a track.

Got plenty of other ideas for this but any unique input would be very helpful. either post in here or drop us an email to

info at hinotestudios.co.uk

would be looking at £5 to £10 price tag for the pack once its finished

cheers

I think definately a pack where shes really giving it some.. this is usefull over a whole board of genres including house, hard house and trance for some impact and excitement rather than some dopey female singing some cheesy dragged out "we can beeee together forever" sung in a really weak tone urgh 2far thumbsup

any thoughts on the legal implications? i know some producers have had success with resung acapellas - BK being one that springs to mind with a massive attack track. pretty sure its ok to resing stuff as long as its listed as a cover version?

after talking advice on the legallities of resinging acapellas we've scrapped that and gone for original stuff only. gonna take some time to compile it all, samplings hard work!

Having a singer is great, working the singer is another thing...lol, I was never really any good 'working' a singer. watched a professional vocal engineer at work and it blew me away....way above my engineering capabilities. But great engineering knowledge if you get it right. And this isnt down to the tools you have but the actual skill.

I had many occasions when i had to have a singer in... one was for burning up, but to be honest, it never ever sounded the same as the sample even though the singer was fantastic sounding... so i mixed it 50/50 and that worked... I had to get a singer as it was about to be pulled from the shelves...but still had to pay a 1/3 to the actual lyricist...so yes, a legal wrangle....but, today with dance music... I would use the sample and not care about anything legal.... its hardly gonna make the top 40 earning a large royalty.... and if it did, you then make a deal with the original artist. I had to do it with Burning up due to that fact it was mainstream, done at PWL and charted....so they kicked up a fuss.

So, all in all i would still get your singer to do some classics....maybe rethink the selling strategy smile

interesting viewpoint.  I was toying with putting some kind of disclaimer to say that I am not responsible for how the content is used but not sure how that would work out really,. original stuff is always gonna be better, theres only so many times classics can be remixed!

i do love working with singers - although only the ones who know what they want and how to get there! it seems obvious but a lot of the work in getting the sound is in the equipment.  The preamps and EQs we have now are second to none and it just makes the vocals sound massive compared to when we didnt have that kind of kit... -  watch this space smile

maybe, but if he did recreate all the instrumentation and re record the singer he did a cracking job of it! (which is apparently what he did)

Iain - Fantastic....you cant beat well produced vocals....they just sit so well in tracks and is what can make or break a track. you can always tell a professional mixdown. smile

Good luck with the recording!

When you make the sample CD.... dont put them down with FX on (other than some compression etc) I hate samples which come with FX on...sounds naff.

I would still encourage you to do some classics though..... it would sell it better.

I would also still risk it without any clearance....you can always remove them if asked.... Sell what people can relate to...then also offer new.

I cant wait to hear what you achieve biggrinthumbsup

cheers Si smile  to be honest i fully intended to do a vocal FX section but I was also going to have the dry vocals as well.  Only because out the vocal packs i have used i have used more from the FX section than anywhere else! will make sure its all keyed and include the bpms as well to make life easier

I've got some eJay vocal packs with re-sung acapellas with a word or two changed so I guess that's one way round it.

Ah Blue Pearl! got i got a great memory with regards her! lol

I loved that track and borrowed the CD which had a great sample on another of the tracks on it... 'I dont want to to make love to me....I want you to fuck me...' I took it and used it on a 'B' Side to 'Feel The Love' on a V2 TDV release.......

I was at the Dome II Birmingham where a special gig was on...Tony played a set....and Blue Pearl was doing a live set afterwards with naked in the rain.....Tony dropped in the track in his set...you should have seen her face! Oops!!! BUT she liked it and we didnt get sued! lol

.....Just goes to show you CAN get away with stealing vocal samples!! - even when the actual artist DOES hear them! lol
