Got a bit of a nerdy list on the go at the moment...
Billion Bipac 7800N - sick to death of my piece of shit Thomson router, and could do with upgrading to something that can handle gigabit lan and wireless N... Don't exactly have £105 in spare change lying about the place though!

Traktor Kontrol S2 - need some kind of controller and this one seems to be highly recommended (well, the S4 does anyway)

My brother in law has really got into his bikes lately and keeps nagging me to do my cbt and go out with him and his biking crew. Hear to many scare stories though about motorbikes and the thought of ending up dead/paralised puts me off a bit with kids to look after. Can understand the buzz though.thumbsup

Out the door for about 21K. Has the full tech package, back up camera, navi, etc. Traded in the Nissan Spec V which was paid off. Got it about 4K under blue book on top of that . And no! Just moved to Colorado so loads of curvy roads and hills.biggrin I wanted a new daily driver and was getting bored with the 08'.  Not anywhere near as fast and torquey as the Chevelle but it handles like a dream. Was leery of the new electric steering system ( I think they started with the 09 redesign) but test drove the shit out of it and I thought it was responsive and got the job done. Almost a little too smooth in the low gears but once that VTEC kicks in!love

Next on my want list is to get to Master Scuba Diver qualification.
Secondly is to learn to drive and obtain my drivers licence.
Thirdly is to get another tattoo- a large piece on my back.

That's about it for now.
Already have my holiday to Thailand booked so that's a reality not a want anymore!

I'm a rescue diver.
I don't yet have enough dives logged to do divemaster and I want to get as much experience as possible before I move on to it.
I'll be doing plenty of diving in Thailand and this year so by next year I'll be fully ready to crack on with it.

Good on you.  The last time I remember you posting about wanting to become a Scuba instructor was last spring and you were only then OW.  Nice progress!

Have you done most of your training in the UK?

Yep, that's PADI.

I qualified in OW just over a year ago and did my subsequent courses in the UK. There's a nice cold lake in Peterborough that has zero viz by 11am due to the silt being kicked up! Fanastic for navigation training etc but not too pleasant for scenery!

I'm now up to 30 logged dives. I'll probably do about ten more in Thailand which will give me the 40 minimum needed to being divemaster.
Doing five specialities will give me the master scuba diver and much more experience plus will bring me up to nearly 60 dives which is needed to complete divemaster.

I'm on track with my two year plan to move abroad. I'll probably just qualify as divemaster in the UK then do an instructor course and internship probably in Thailand. thumbsup

It's hard to get a job as a Divermaster yes as they can only accompany dives not actually teach anything, plus they're ten a penny so there's loads who are willing to give their time for free diving but no pay.
As an instructor it's easy- particularly as I'm female. There's quite a high demand for female instructors as they're so thin on the ground. You can expect to earn about 10k a year as an instructor which isn't much but plenty enough to live on when you're living somewhere as cheap as Thailand

Become a full-time illustrator earning an enormous wedge doing pretty pictures. I also want to move house. I'm sick of where we are now. It's not a bad area, far from it, but I desire a more semi-rural type setting with something nice to look at from the window rather than the view being the other boring burb bastards I have to live near.

You couldn't pick a worse time to think about getting one though, unless you already have a couple of spare hard drives lying about you're gonna have to pay an extortionate amount!

Lol it costs £6-7 for a pint of guinness there, Thailand is fucking expensive now, Unless you want to eat roasted cockroaches 24/7 that is. A decent house there will cost 2 million baht. thats £41,000 that would take me approx 72 years to save if i saved everything and didn't go out for a beer once.

The 7800N has a completely different chipset than any other Billion model, its a fantastic router. I have a pretty dodgy line and have tried 5 different routers on it and the 7800N beat all of them by a country mile.

Depends where you work. As with anything there's good places and bad places. Places that make money and places that don't.
I'll be doing my research very carefully before finding myself a job. I'm not going to work anywhere that's going to exploit me by making me work 7 days a week and  paying me fuck all.
Luckily I now have a few connections so I should be able to find a job via a 'friend of a friend'
I find it hard to believe that someone who owned his own dive school didn't even earn 10k a year. He can't have been very good at it!

In answer to your other question we're heading straight up to Chang Mai for three nights then flying down to Phuket and getting a taxi to Ao Nang in Krabi for ten nights then getting a speed boat to Koh Yao Yai for two nights before heading to Surat Thani and getting the night train to Bangkok.
Really looking forward to it. There's six of us going (including Timmeh) so a nice sized group.

I know, harddrives aren't cheap at the moment. Saying that, they aren't too over the top. I heard they aren't going to get cheaper anytime soon either. Ive got a TB drive I could do with getting out of my PC. Also living in Jersey we don't pay VAT so I always get a bit off smile

My GF is with BSAC and is a qualified Sports Diver now (35m I think).  She loves it but HATES diving in Britain 'cause it's so cold.  She'll only dive in the Med now (she really wants to go to the Gallapagos, but it's ridiculously expensive to go there)

Don't know how good he was but it doesn't neccesarily mean he was bad, You're in a foreign 3rd world country, the locals can't afford to hire you, EVER. The average pay there is only about 3000 baht a month [£60!frown ], The only people hiring you are the expats and foreign tourists, So low season you're getting near enough £0. High season you have to fight like hell as every single beach in LOS has atleast 1 PADI centre there already haha. Over the past decade less and less people have been going the LOS due to fund issues, The way this slump is hitting every person & business i'm suprised there is any centres left there.

Chang mai is the only place/area i have not been to in LOS, Let me know how you get on there and if it's any good. I may have to go nick a Chang from there laughing

Billion are shit thumbsdown

The 7800N has a completely different chipset than any other Billion model, its a fantastic router. I have a pretty dodgy line and have tried 5 different routers on it and the 7800N beat all of them by a country mile.

Fair enough.  One of my customer is an ISP in the UK and they were using the 7800N as it was one of the first routers that supported IPv6.  But they absolutely hated it! laughing  They've moved to Technicolor (Thomson) now, but only 'cause it's dirt cheap.

I deal with plenty of other ISP's whp won't touch Billion with a bargepole but, if you've had a good experience, who am I to argue?

have you looked into the divie master pay and that in thailand cos it didnt seem that easy to get a job and the pay wasent great for the work, i was thinking of doing it in 06 but decided against it

Are you sure about that? Not heard of that high wage before in LOS for a diving instructor, I was talking to a lad who owned his own PADI dive centre in LOS and he didn't even get nowhere near that much, He had all the qualifications too. Be careful Jay!

On topic... I think my next toy is a NAS drive
They're fucking brilliant, but well worth splashing out a little bit extra on some decent kit if you can! (I've heard nothing but good about synology's models)
You couldn't pick a worse time to think about getting one though, unless you already have a couple of spare hard drives lying about you're gonna have to pay an extortionate amount!

Yeah I was going to get a Synology one looking at the reviews and that.

We sell Synology where I work - let me know which model you're looking at and I should be able to get you a good deal mate thumbsup

I was once a backpacker, Ages ago lol... i did all the cheap nasty stuff, I dont know why people want to have the grotty experience lol.. you may as well pay "slightly more" to have a better experience, Why go all the way around the world and do grotty stuff when you can do that at home haha laughing.  Get a good hotel and ok transport then everything else is sorted really, Bus rides are cheap as fuck but much better then that old dirty train.

Flights are cheap within Thailand anyway, I can get one way flight tickets for under 2000 baht or returns for 3000 baht lol, If i book it well in advance then i can easily get return flights within thailand for 1600 baht on promo thumbsup

I've been on the night train before and it was brilliant!
I went second class which meant I didn't have my own private room and I still had a great nights sleep.
