on the topic. my speed comes in around 11mbs download. but in actual realtime downloads it never goes beyond about 1.1mb on download, doesnt matter what server its off either. It seems like its capped but even Sky say its at 11mb/s download and the router settings say the same.

any ideas?

That sounds about right. I cant remember the exact maths behind it but i think your actual download is 1/8th of your supposed download speed. Like Jon will never download at 100mbps. My download speed is around 4mbps but i only ever get 600kbps max.

Im on the Sky 20MB package. it should be at 11mb/s as the router says and Sky themselves confirm that is what the line speed says. But it never goes beyond that 1.1mb mark

The net may be running at 11mbps yea. But you will never get them sort of download speeds. As i said, the actual download speed is 1/8th of that. Not even if u were on the full 20mbps line with perfect connection would you get 11mbps download speeds. Its physically impossible.

That's not why you dont get max speed.

Your download speed is only as fast as the slowest link in the process - that is more than likely the output speed of the server you are accessing.  They tend to either throttle each connection, or have so much demand that they cant keep up.  Ways round this are to run multiple connection threads at the same, this is what protocols like FTP allow you to do.

You would have noticed on sites like megaupload you can pay to get faster connectivity, and when you do, they simply raise the ceiling on the throttle speed.

Of course some sites don't throttle at all, such as usergroups that share movies etc or other large files.  Of course even with these you are unlikely to get anywhere near 100mb down

if you download more than one film between 4pm - 9pm you'll get nothing for the next 12 hours on virgin media.

I had a message saying they are upgrading customers, then noticed that as im a Large tariff, they aren't upgrading my speed. Everyone else is though.

Nothing to do with that at all, nothing to do with 'capping'.

You have 100 megaBYTE internet. 8 bits in a byte....

Therefore 1 MegaByte will give 128kbps download......

Bandwidth and speed.... different things. thumbsup

Similar to hard drive sizes.... shops selling the byte size and not the bit, so its actually smaller than what it looks.....

Erm... Wrong way around mate!laughing Connections are advertised in Mb/s, but download speeds are measured in KB/s or MB/s

Virgin offer 100Mb/s connections, not 100MB/s.
A 100Mb connection has a theoretical download speed of 12.5MB/s

It's a fairly different story with hard drive sizes too. Their capacity is advertised with the literal translation of kilo/mega/giga etc in mind (multiples of 1000), whereas your computer works it out as a power of 2... It's decimal vs binary, rather than bit vs byte

sorry, 2mega(b)it internet 256k(B)yte download...slip of the finger uhoh

Hard drives are sold in Bytes which is denary, no different to you quoting multiples of a thousand. Obviously for every gig advertised in denary you'll lose about 70 meg (1000 to 1024 ratio).

Robbing bastards lol

I am paying for 10mb @ £26 per month with virgin media. Got a letter today saying they are going to increase it to 20mb by July this year.
