Heres a crazy idea: Get the fuck off a forum, go do the research yourself like your suppose to and stop being a lazy twat. Anyway, how is someone's OPINION of a certain form of music going to help you construct a good factually sound piece of writing for a project? Its not, and you will get shit marks. Harvard referencing? "Bloke of a forum" uhoh

maybe frankie bones too (might be too techno-ey but from what i understand things weren't as regimented and pigeon-holed). there's also a flowchart of the history of house that HTFR used to send out as a poster with purchases that would be useful if you can find a copy on the net. you know where the term 'house' comes from?

What do you want to know? House came out of the waning days of the gay disco clubs in Chicago and NYC. And what's "American" house? That doesnt really make sense. All "house" is American. That is if you're using the definition correctly. I've always found it odd the lack of knowledge on this site when it comes to the origins of dance music. When probably 70% of the people who use this forum listen exclusively to 1, maybe 2, sub genres of a sub genre of a sub genre of dance music. Like saying you're a Christian having never read more than the bumper sticker verses from the bible.  laughing

That's actually different from a documentary i saw about house and it's origins. On that it was stated that the term house comes from a single person who was experimenting with tape loops and coming up with house. (it was some famous chicago or detroit club - can't remember which now) he played it at his residency and the term 'house' comes from 'the music of the house', which stuck as it was the only place churning that stuff out at the time. i'm not vouching for the accuracy of the TV docco but that's what it was saying.

To be honest, I don't think BT is your best bet; I would suggest going to djhistory.com as a first stop.

A few books to check out:

Love Saves The Day (more about the 70's, but those are the roots)
Generation Ecstasy
Last Night A DJ Saved My Life
Altered State
Pump Up The Volume: A History of House Music

If you need some names to get you started on your research, here are a few key ones (this is by no means comprehensive):

Chicago:
Frankie Knuckles (of the Warehouse club)
Marshall Jefferson
Robert Owens
Trax Records
DJ Pierre
Larry Heard (aka Fingers Inc, Mr Fingers)

Here's a good old skool Chicago house mix for you

New York:
Larry Levan (of the Paradise Garage)
Strictly Rhythm (label)
Todd Terry
Masters At Work
Danny Tenaglia
David Mancuso

Detroit:
Derrick May
Jaun Atkins
Kevin Saunderson

Also, if you want a very very comprehensive guide to US house, you can't go wrong with this podcast from Bodytonic

The sound of US house today is the bastard child of detroit techno, a load of shit imo. Commericial pap.

Agree. Also check out Deep House Page for truck loads of mixes from back in day (mostly off radio), some history plus some of the old house (and disco) heads from Chiacgo post on therethumbsup

Add to the Chicago list Jessie Saunders who claims to have created the first house record in this book. Pretty one-sided but some interesting stuff in there and strange as I always thought the Frankie Knuckles remix of Jago - I'm Going to Go was the first house record (or proto-house). But then what do I know?laughing
