Since its a SATA drive Chris definitely dont immediately assume all your stuff has been lost - After I installed my new sata drive, whenever I started the computer from cold it would tell me 'boot device not detected' despite me having installed the Maxtor drivers...and once I restarted it again, it worked fine munted seems to be fine now but I dont know why yawn

which message?

when you reinstalled windows, did you format the hard drive in full (not the "quick" option)?

message saying hardrive not found :-/

dunno about format, i just made a dos boot disk and typed format c: - is there another way???

After dots suggestion, i started looking on western digital site and found some drivers called "Silicon Image SiI 3x12 SATALink Controller Driver Installation"...from reading the text file, i think this may be what im after... lemme know about the format thing, cos i will format again and try using these drivers - if not, looks like im gonna have to phone dell 2morrow laughing

when you select the partition/drive to install windows, it should give you a number of formatting options - you should pick the NTFS full format (not the quickie option).

Are you pressing F6 at the required time and choosing the right driver to select?

dont format it yourself, I dont think the DOS format commands support the FAT32 and NTFS file systems - when you install Windows (the blue background screen) you should have format options at some point after selecting where you want to install windows.

Hey, im having the same problem with the same harddrive, and same Dell Demension 8400 series pretty much.  So I looked up some drivers, and pulled out a fresh floppy disk, and remembered something very critical.  I don't have a floppy drive frown.  And every time i press F6, it wants it from floppy drive.  Any ideas?

check your bios!

I dont know with dell shit, but it might be F2, DEL or similar, from boot up.

Then look to see what it has set as the primary IDE etc...

I would normally say, reset the bios but with dell you may have to unplug boards and leads etc to get to the jumper pins... and thats if it has any?!

So, are YOU going to give it a rave review or just bounce it out of the window? This is why they put them in strong cases!
