Was going up the motorway today in my dads truck at about 60mph in the middle lane going past another truck when the air pipe from the brakes broke off and the brakes jammed on. The wheels on the trailer locked up and it jack-knifed sideways down the motorway pushing the truck at the side into the hard shoulder and onto the grass verge. Covered the whole motorway in a massive cloud of smoke to, couldnt see a fucking thing behind.

Finally ended up with in the hard shoulder with the trailer blocking part of the motorway off with the brakes jammed on yawn

Fucking hell Dot!eeek

Sounds like you're VERY lucky to be alive dude! I used to drive on the motorway all the time in my previous life and the things scare the living shit out of me tbh. Loads of people (mainly fucking morons) flying along at 70-90 miles an hour in gigantic lumps of metal......not exactly where I'd choose to spend ANY time nowadays!

Tell me about. So many things could have happened. We had just about gone past the truck so he managed to get out the way, had we have been side by side we'd have gone straight into him. Luckily the trailer went to the left, had it have gone to the right we'd have squashed a few cars into the barrier and possibly flattened the barrier. And we were on a straight bit of road, god knows what would have happened had we have been on any kind of bend.

Was kinda cool checking out the skid marks on the way back though, they're fucking massive yawn

My mum was side swipped the other week on a duel carridgeway and piled down an embankment into a tree.  It's scary to think how easily things might of changed in a split second. Bet your shaken up.  Any injuries?

None at all mate, everyone walked away scott free.

The bloke who we forced off the road nearly got squashed after though. Him and my dad were messing with the airlines for the brakes on the trailer then my dad went and got in the cab to see if they'd unlocked. This bloke obviously hadnt noticed and proceeded to get under the trailer to look at the brake discs at the same time my dad was trying to drive off dunce

Luckily I spotted what they were both up to and got him out from under there quick but as it happened they were still locked on so the truck never movedmunted

Still cant believe no one was injured at some point eeek

ah, gotta love the good old engineering concept of "fail safe" yawn Yes, stopping the vehicle as soon as physically possible must be the safest way for the vehicle to behave in an emergency uhoh I mean, granted, being in a huge lorry with no brakes at speed is also dangerous, but fuck me, that's gotta scare the shit outta the driver to have the truck suddenly lurch out of control munted Count your lucky stars, dot! thumbsup

Unfortunately there's practically no other way. In their normal state the brakes are locked on. When you start the engine it fills the air tanks and opens the brakes so you can move. If the air supply then fails they lock on. As you said, the only other option is to have no brakes and I cant see health and safety going for that uhoh

Yeah, i realise how they work... just suggesting that perhaps an alternative, better thought-out design might not be so hard to come up with. A few fast check valves and a normally-open bleeder nozzle could slowly release the air pressure in the case of a hose coming off or breaking or whatever. At least that gives the driver a bit more warning and control as the vehicle comes to a stop - it would massively reduce the tendency to jacknife and give other drivers more time to react as well. I mean, whatever, that's just a super-quick idea, but I'm sure if you gave an engineering team a week to come up with a design for a slow-release airbrake failsafe mechanism, you'd probably walk away with ten good designs, many of which would be cheap and easy to implement. Strikes me as odd that someone would think 100% instant full-braking would be a smart thing to have a vehicle do, even in an emergency munted

Surely the technical bods would've implemeted something like that by now if it was possible ?

It is most certainly possible. The problem is that engineers tend to think in such abstract ways that they sometimes lose touch with reality. I'm sure they thought

hrm...problem - if brakes break, then truck no stop without crash.

Yes, truck no stop without crash bad. Must invoke failsafe - must have brakes ON if broken.

Ah, i see why you're the senior engineer!

Yes, I copied the ISO handbook onto my arm using a felt pen.

that is so fucking true! at work, when we have a unit fuck up, me and mate who've been on the shop usually say somethijng like "the unit is probably just shorting out on the casing" but oh no, the engineers have different ideas which involve weeks and weeks of research...only to find that the unit is shorting out on the casing yawn

Many are yes but the legal limit is 60mph and some obviously use that for speed/time purposes. Some stick to a slower speed for fuel efficiency reasons. This is why you see trucks in the middle lane snailing it past a slightly slower truck. When you throw in the massive wind resistance some trucks cant get past if the difference is only 1-2mph so they end up boxed up travelling 10 feet from each other.

Stats have shown that these new laws have created more problems than they've solved when trucks were travelling at many different speeds. I've been 85mph in some trucks which is obviously OTT so something needs doing but a blanket 60mph limit isnt quite the answer.

I dunno... a few dings and bruises on account of some sans-licence, intoxicated, asylum seeker driving a bedraggled, overloaded lorry with no MOT and an expired tax disc, might well be ironically amusing, given the circumstances Uploaded Image

Just glad you're ok Matt.  Fucking hell mate, woulda shaken me up bigtime!  Sounds like a shit design tho ... Anyway, git yerself back in the cab and onto the motorway pronto eh? thumbsup

I had a very scary moment the other morning ... had just seen Sinc off at Heathrow (at 7am ... ouchie!) having had only 4 hours' sleep, and wasn't looking forward to the drive (in his car) back down the M4 in torrential rain.  Bear in mind I am insured only TPFT for his brand new Octavia.  Anyway, between slips at one of the junctions for Reading I move over to the middle lane (it's busy) to let ppl onto the m'way, and this fucking stupid cunt is coming down the slip, straight into the nearside lane (fine) and then ... er ... straight into the middle lane eeek Was forced into the outside lane to avoid him and I was just lucky there wasn't somebody already there! Shook me up proper, it did ... fucking stupid arsewipe angry

I don't get it, why do drivers drive at 90mph+ when the visibility is almost nil?
