To progress or not progress, that is the question!

Music Style Hard House

Just wonderin:

Who would rather listen to a set (at home or in a club) and hear a really well organised set, where each tune relates to the last tune, and that steadily progresses from beginning to end, and who would rather listen to a set thats plain simple 'bang bang bang, hoover hoover hoover'

Personally I prefer well thought out set that progresses logically.

This should be fun, where's Flymo yawn

Sets should progress, except for the last set or 2, I can't think of anything more boring than listening to 8 hours of militant hoovers thumbsdown

Progression is the only way things dont become stale and boring...

In my opinion, set progression is much more important then any form of technical ability for non-turntablism genres

Music Style Quality never goes out of style.

Has to be progression for me to enjoy it.  As someone said - it just gets boring.

Steve Thomas is the master.  Farley's pretty good too when he's building it up.

Set progression!! theres so much scope to play so many different types of choon now it would be rude not too!!
However, a club night should also progress, not 6 different sets that all start with techno, then play funky hard house, then hard house then NRG.
finding a blanace!! dont know too many clubs that have it right yet

Progression !

A night needs to keep building and building up .

I hate when some1 hammers the bollox out of it at the start it fucks up the night and you notice new faces that prob aint mad in2 hh coming into the club and running straight back out . I also think its dis respectfull towards the djs on afterwards . .

Do you mean the last set should not progress, or doesnt really have to progress?? Or do you mean the last set should include lots of nasty, dirty hoovers??

Its my opinion that even the hardest sets should still include some progression.

Doesn't really have to progress that much, obviously a little bit is good, but I'm quite happy to have a flat out nails set at the end of the night, by that time it doesn't really matter because the guy or gal before you has probably taken it pretty damn hard anyway!

What impresses me about Steve Thomas is his ability to drop things back down to a sensible level, after the DJ beforehand plays too hard, and rebuild - not an easy thing to do by anyones standards!

Thats probably what Id do if someone proper banged it out before me, slow it down a little and build up again. Like you say though it could easily backfire, people could veiw it as the night not actually progressing properly.

I remember when I was at Kube in Wakefield once, they had Hixxy and Slipmatt on, Hixxy proper banged it out with typical hardcore, then Slipmatt came on and slowed it right down, playing stuff like 'Joyenergizer' and 'The Drill', for me that totolly ruined the structure of the night, having it fast as fuck then reducing it to pretty damn boring! Idiot!!! There was some puzzled faces that night! (especially Hixxy!!!)

I don't think progression in a set is massively important in hard house but throughout the night the style should definitely progress. If every DJ through the night plays a progressive set then it's just going to end up a bit all over the place

exactly, by everyone playing 6 progressive hardhouse sets, the night itseld actually DOESNT progress.....weird eh?!?
Got to play a range of genres that build throughout the night, which is why pidgeon holing is so bad for the scene!

I dont know, if you put the right people on, everyone could play a hard house set that progresses, but the people on at the end would obviously have to play harder hard house than the people who were on at the start. It looks to me like Insekt do exactly that. James Nardi on at the beggining would obviously not be as hard as Marc Johnson at the end, but I bet they still both progress there own sets. And I bet it doesnt get boring.

Exactlythumbsup You obviously wouldnt book a whole night of hard as nails DJ's if you wanted the night to progress in some form.

Music Style loads of stuff.
personnally i like nights that bang it out from the off.for me i dont need warm up sets to appreciate how good the last set is. if the last set is good id rather they were all like that. not the same tunes but just all menacing.

forget progression within a particular style for a minute, i'd like to see a return to having a mix of styles throughout a night like they used to have at some of the QUE clubs events and most free parties.  Makes a night more interesting IMO and more memorable.  I went to insomz a few years back and it was like some kind of purist hell with each DJ playing a similar style of hardhouse

whilst seeming to contradict my last post, i agree with this sentiment.  If your out to bosh then thats what you want to hear, warm ups should be kept to the pre club bar.

Give us hard boshin but move around the styles a bit

Progression all the way thumbsup

Its like when you have a bad day and then something good happens, it makes you even happier having experienced the two extremes..

I hate walking into clubs where its 160bpm having it at 11pm... I want to be seduced first love then when the banging commences I appreciate it more (plus as loads of people said before - it gets boring after a while)
