Its so nice to see so many Cubase Users on here!!

Ive used this since it changed from Pro24 back on the Atari and never looked back!

Even today im still using Version 5 since i havent had the time to change to SX!

Also, even though i have a legit copy i still use the cracked one???

Virtually every track i ever produced was done via Cubase but some of the early stuff was done on C-Lab's Creator program cuz i didnt like Pro24!

When my Atari finally gave up we went straight over to an Apple Powermac 7100/80mhz where for a while i found it worse than the atari (including the Midex addon) untill we purchased the Opcode Studio 5LX 240 MIDI channel interface which made it awsome to use with MIDI gear! This Apple and MIDI interface was the main workhorse for years!

It wasnt until 2002 that i upgraded the Mac to a G3 (Beige one with SCSI) and added a G4 Processor upgrade which i used up until 2003 where i changed over to PC due to the stability of XP and not being able to afford the G5!

I had a few problems with PC & MIDI together with MIDI timing problems on Cubase but this was soon sorted when i bought two Midisport 8x8/s and the ROM upgrade! smile

I still miss the mac but im now ready to move over to Cubase SX and scale my Studio down to an all PC setup.

I played around with Reason and found it 'fun', i also tried Logic and found it too different to Cubase...so, Im sticking with Steinberg for a while now!

Cubase Rocks!

I actually prefer cubase v2 on the atari to cubase SX 2 on the pc in a lot of ways, its a lot more direct to use (or basic)

and black and white rocks.

Im still so tempted to stick with5.1R2 as im familiar with it.....I like to now just switch on the PC, load XP & Cubase then just play away on the keyboard to whats in my head without a thought to what menus or key shortcuts i need to remember. If i go over to SX i need to learn again from scratch which will hinder my creative streak.

I know its probaby bettter and bigger etc... but fuck me, after over 13 years of using it i still dont knowwhat half of it does! biggrin

I mean it uses VSTi's and other mad plugins which is all i need really - I can quantise, arrange and EQ...what more do i need?

Can anyone give me a real possitive reason to shift to SX yet?

One person who taught me everything i needed to know about Cubase in the early years has followed Cubase ever since it was born... He is a professional keyboard player and score writer and tells me that SX blows 5.1 away mainly due to its nuendo engine and stability? It also has a few neat little tricks too....somewhere?

So, can anyone give me any pointers and reasons to change over?

cheers again guys!

I stick to 5.1 . ..... the only reason I was using the SX at any time  was the automation you get using the VST effects during the playback . I did manage the automation of synths with 5.1 but for some reason the effects wont do it .

Hi Simon, i learned cubase 5.1 at college then switched to SX2 when i got my G5 there isnt that much difference btw the 2.  Picked up how to do most things from 5.1 in a few hours, it does seem to be a lot more stable than 5.1 and automation and few other bits of trickery are easier to do. And it looks nicer?? The thing is if ur using it just for writing tunes as opposed to recording or anything else, there isnt much point in upgrading, i mean i use the basic sequencer function, VSTs, automation and recording but all the other "incredible" features i have never touched, 5.1 did everything i ever needed and the only reason we got it is it came with a software deal... guess it depends how bothered you are about getting really indepth with it rolleyes

right rant over smile

i was on sx 2 up to a couple of months back but switched to mackie's tracktion 2... i think it's much easier for audio and quicker to work with than sx but the main reason was the way it handles vst's and effects, you can pop one on a track then grab it and swap it to another track in a sec or route say 12 tracks into 1 vst fx and that into something else... only draw back is for editing audio it aint as spec'd as sx but you can do that b4 hand in say wavelab or something

I dont know, I only have a sempron and ive had no problems yet, as long as I use group channels for the main fx the cpu usage barely registers...

Reason? out of ten.

Cubase? out of ten.

both are quite different and stand up great on their own but also go nicely together if you figure out Rewire biggrin

Reason - 7 out of ten since the Arrange sequencer is a bit basic and could hav bin like cubase (i found it annoying after arranging on cubase)

Cubase - Well, i would give it eleven but i still think its too overcomplicated - It should leave all the special bits to just being loadable modules like the Arp etc... them you could customise the main page a bit better. I dont know logic well but i know its on par with cubase....some operations are better than others in both programs.

At the end of the day if your not musical, dont have a tune in your head then stick to programs like Acid where you can drag and drop. biggrin

Cubase i'll go with 10 but when i first got it it annoyed me a lot.. but reason works sooooooo well with cubase, its just a big VST really, i get frustated with reaon on its own, mainly cos its mixer sounds crap and u cant load audio properly, but its great for messing around and getting some ideas together, oh and the cominator patches rock, pistolsan 8/10 i reckon.

Reason - 6 or 7.....good to get started but the craptatsic sequencer does your fucking head in after a while

Logic - 8....I just never seemed to come to grips with it at all...love some of the features but could never quite get it to do what I was after

Cubase - 9 or 10....only been using it for a few days but am absolutly loving it....easy to use....some great features....top stuffbiggrin

reason- 7/10 - the rex loop player is the shit as is the redrum - no other drum machine out there compares to this- unless its hardware - its just so easy to get good percussion out of it .Sadly the sound is crap as os the audio editing or lack of =) i still think it would have to be the easiest music programme to use though and you can bang out tunes in no time.

Logic - 9/10 - Never really put the time into learning how to use it - i have a couple of mates that use it and i have seen them working on it and i was very impressed with how quickly you can get things done - as i mentioned earlier the es1 and es2 are both wicked synths.

Cubase 9/10 - What can i say after learning how to use this properly i'll never go back or use anything else - i love it .

I think logic and cubase are in exactly the same league in my eyes the only thing that outs logic above cubase is the es 1 and 2 but what cubase lacks in the way of factory synths it makes up for with its audio editing capabilities. =) my 2 cents

I used to knock programs like EJAY and fruity Loops but even these programs have become more sofisticated at manipulating audio!

Like I have said before, they are all tools...its not the program but the person. you need the talent and skill allowing the tools to assist you.

Bit like a carpenter an a DIYer, a carpenter with a few basic hand tools and the DIYer with the latest cordless mega tools where the carpenter still produces the best finished job!

You need an idea and a way to aproach the idea first, then get to know/learn your tools from a basic level...then practice makes perfect biggrin

I started with ideas in my head and knowing i had a sense of rhythm, tunes floating about here and there. Then i boaght myself a basic keyboard and learned to play chords by copying known track rifffs etc. The main part was being able to split a commercial track down into its basic components in my head.....Bass, Drums, leads etc...then i practiced playing what was in my head until i had the riffs i wanted. Then i needed to put different tracks down via four track so i learned how to layer tracks and make them sit together (volume, eq etc). PC sequencers came along to allow me to put down more tracks. As i needed certain sounds i learned how to tweak synths and sample and add that to my midi notes (the sequenced notes i played). when i finished a track i then had to learn how to master - EQ, Compression, PAN and limit etc...to a stereo mix. again a good way to learn is to compare your mix to a commercial one!

Hey presto! a track i learned without manuals or tuition! (maybe a few manuals for quick reference only!) - And i didnt even mention a name of software or synth!!

Bit like driving a car! - as long as you know the basics....gears, steering wheel, brakes, lights etc....who cars what model or make it is! biggrin

I still cant read music or follow 'shouted out' chords but i cant build a car from scratch either! laughing

Fruity can knock out a few good lead sounds . Thank god I saved the page from the net about making a hard synth lead as It's now offline .

I had a go using this CamelPhat effect yesterday . http://www.kvraudio.com/get/538.html lovely . practice is always needed . don't wanna be going rusty even if it's putting the basic ideas together . you need to know the gear . Then mess with this eq http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1790.html . Ive been pulling out many unfinnished tracks and using this on them . what a sound .

When i first heard about a program called 'Fruity Loops' i nearly pissed myself laughing......I mean, it sounded like a right load of shite!

I even took the piss out of guyver who used it all the time...this was so, so, so embarassing when i was at the Tidy Weekender and was introduced to him by Andy Pickles....I was pissed as fuck when i asked guyver what he used and nearly laughed in his face!! So, Guyver, if u are listening....please forgive me! I was pissed and never heard of Fruity loops when, now ive tried it, found it 'interesting' as a tool!!

quite unique in its own right which is hard nowadays against Logic and Cubase!

And nice as a plugin alongside Cubase!

Si.
