Do you sort a set out beforehand or do you just pick random records up and mix them?

are you meaning playing out or recording a cd? if i'm playing out (which doesn't happen often uhoh) i'll have a few records in mind that i want to play, but normally i just play what seems right to follow on form the last tune, if you know what i mean.

if i'm recording a cd i usually sort out the tracklisting beforehand

Well i suppose you're more likely to select certain tunes when playing out but some of my friends just take their box with them and play what they feel like when they get there. I tend to change mine depending on what mood i'm in and who's listening to it.

I'll usually have a few tunes that I've just picked up or been sent that I'll definately play, otherwise it's just working it out on the spot (what most DJs do really!) thumbsup

Same as, have a few that a want to give an airing but the rest kinda depends on the crowd, the last DJ, and what I feel like at the time.

If i'm doing a mix cd at home i like to give a little thought before going at it.Playing out is a bit different as you have to adapt to the mood, music being played and what the crowd react to.I would always have a bunch of about 6 or 7 records of a few different styles i know i would play, just carry some extra's to get to where you wanna be with the style you wanna play to show a bit of progression.

Planned sets never sound as good, its better when your mood just sets the tone of the set supercool

random for me. Would usually just go looking through a box until i find a tune that i want to hear!! as long as it will sound good with the current playin track!

If I'm playing out I play whatever I fancy at the time, If I record a cd I normally plan it out then change my mind half way through and do it off the cuff anyway

Music Style Lots!

When I'm playing out I have small chunks of tunes I know work well together, but otherwise read the crowd and go with what's doing it for them smile

When I record I plan my sets carefully, cause that is going to be listened to over and over, and there is no 'crowd' to react to, so you might as well show how well you can progress a set smile

Never plan a set before hand!! You never know your crowd before you interact with them. Therefore, take your box of really good records, start your set off and see where the crowd wants it to go from there. Then the secret comes, giving the crowd what they want, but also blending your own unique style in there.....guess thats where the art of being a dj comes in. Obviouslly technical skill is a bonus, but track selection is VITAL!!!
