the nrg riff lead that is often used on Passion, Braindamage often puzzles me..

is it a trance arp on a low octave EQed and delayed or are they sampled hoovers, panned etc?

Both samples & live synths are used, although a lot of people do tend to re-use the typical hoover sound mainly. Filter, pan delays, chorus etc all make the sound.

It's rarely that complicated. I prefer to work with a synth myself but I think most people are using samples. Some delay, a little chorus and a filter sweep will bring it back to life. The riff's are almost always simple. I'm actually suprised the scene has not run out yet biggrin
