I'd go with French, Spanish or Italian. And stay clear of Russian, Chinese and similar if you don't want it to be too hard.

spanish and/or french, lot of cognates, probably spanish more than anything.  any of the romance languages (spanish, french, italian), all stemmed from latin and had major influences on english.  maybe even german is ok, but not as easy as the other three.

anything with non-english letters, good luck!

No because french is talking backwards you talk in reverse, Spanish hmmm dont know about that, Italian has some right hard pronouced words to come to terms with.

Those are difficulties inherent in learning any language.

Aparently Russian, Arabic & Chinese are the three most difficult to learn. Or so this fella I met claimed. He's a language freak though. Speaks two handfulls of languages and actually did these three in a matter of 5 years looking When I met him he was only in Taiwan for something like a year and he was basically fluent at that time. Hectic.

Pick a language, then go live there for 6 months to a year. That'll learn yuh..... the best way, doesnt matter  where or how hard it is then. Forced circumstance is always the best way to pick it up.thumbsup

And you get to travel too.smile

And if you go with Italian (Probably the more interesting of the beginner languages such as French and Spanish etc.) i'd recommend starting here: http://abruzzo2000.com/course/index.html.

Of course if you can afford it, audio CDs/Tapes are the best way.

Same Danny. I've been in the far east for 5 years now and do you think I've mastered Mandarin Chinese yet ? Have I, fuck ?! munted I studied for a short while and learnt a few things. Then I quit 'cause I worked so much that I was simply too knackered to study as well. I never picked up the studies again because I get along just fine with what I know. Well, I could be doing much better laughing but I can say what I know well enough from repeating it so many times - Hahaha.

I work in an all English environment, so it's not really a place where you pick up much of the language ... and outside of work, you end up mingling with English speaking locals (that push for free lessons all the time) so that's also no good.

Well obviously if your there to learn the lingo you dont hang around the bars and so on in the areas where english is learnt by the locals in order to fleece you eficiently. You go into the hills or the country proper, not the tourist spots.yawnyawn

One of my housemates at uni speaks 5 languages and is training to become an interpreter - he reckons German is the hardest language to master of the ones he speaks (english, russian, french, german and flemish/dutch)

*edit* its 5, not 6 lol

Nah, I didn't come here for the language. It's just a neccesary add on since I live here now.
