I am looking to buy a cdj but im torn between getting a pioneer or a denon. The denons to me seem to have more features than the pioneers and after watching a few demos seem to do almost anything. Can anyone shed some light on the subject for me, does anyone own or used both so they can give me some advice. Cheers

Go for a Pioneer m8. The Denon will probably break after a week!!!!!!!!!

99.9% probably do but does that make them better than the denon?! Im not sure, same with mixers, i have a djm 600 which is a wicked mixer and is used in many clubs along with the new djm 3000 but then allen and heath do some top notch mixers which people swear by so which is best?! Its more personal opinion than fact but was just wanting some opinions!

The Denon's are awesome, the new direct drive motor just completes the package, seriously better than the Pioneer

would this overcome the problems outlined in this thread (with respect to the denons)?

Hard HouseXone62, it pisses all over the 500.
The problem I have with the Pioneer stuff is it feels cheap, the 500 is flimsy & the effects are pretty naff & I don't think it's as intuitive as the Allen & Heath, I've also heard a lot of stories about bits breaking off. It's the same for the CD turntables, they just don't feel as well made as the Denons, also at the moment you can pick up a Denon dirt cheap as everyone is going for the Pioneer.
All the talk about 'industry standard' is crap because anyone with half a brain fucked on ket should be able to transfer the basics which is the most important thing....

Im going to test out the new denon s3500 cause it looks the muts nuts. Your right about getting what you feel is best, i disagree that pioneers feel cheap, mine aint plastic and nothing has broken off it so im happy with it. I wouldnt say the effects unit is the best, felt the numark 5000fx was better but sound and build quality the pioneer wee's all over it. The fact is that for the money you can pick up a denon with more to offer than a pioneer. We will see

if you had the choice, you'd have to be mad if you choose denon over pioneer

I think I've had this discussion with you before haven't I Ethan? Older Denon units were buggy as hell and prone to breaking down, the new ones kick ass. In terms of features they shit all over the Pioneers, mixing on them is a thousand times better. I've never been a fan of Pioneer products, the DJM's are shit mixers, the sound quality that they pump out is disgusting compared to an A&H and they just feel cheap. The CDJ's are pretty good, wouldn't turn one down for sure, but the Denons are much much better in all respects.

Went and tried out the pioneer cdj 1000 and i didnt like it, the platter felt cheap and plastic, it doesnt play mp3s, it just wasnt good, same with the cdj 200 which does play mp3s but still felt cheap and plastic. For me i would be mad to shell out £730 on a cdj 1000 when the denon s3500 has so many more features and is cheaper (if only by £30). The reason that pioneer cdj's are "industry standard" is because they were the first to bring so many features into a cd deck and make it user friendly, now other manufacturers like denon, vestax, numark are raising the bar when it comes to dj equipment, for exampe the new numark cd deck has a hard drive built into it, its new mixers are all going to come with usb connectivity. AS far as im concerned the denons are the way to go for me, they look good, feel good and for the money have the best features.

I have 2 Pioneer CDJ 100s, a mate has CDJ 800's another has the Denon 3000's. I rekon they're all good, mine are obviously very basic, both the higher end Denon and Pioneers are great to mix on. I would go for the Pioneers if I was to upgrade. The problem with the Denon is simply the time it takes to cue up. With Pioneers it's within seconds, I found it more difficult with the Denons.
With Pioneers you can use the fastforward button and then use the jog wheel for extra speed, plus with the finger on the ff button you can use the jogwheel to also go back and it's on your cue point in seconds. On the Denon's as far as I can work out it's not possible to do this. The only options are hit FF once and it'll skip forward 1 minute or hold it and it'll FF (but not quick enough IMO).

Quickly whilst mixers were mentioned, I own a Tascam x9, the masses were out on this mixer because it was too busy an interface to use for many - a little perserverance, this unit rocks, sweet effects, uncomparable EQ and the sound quality ia amazing. As used by the techno ledgend Mr Clarke

Funky Beats & BasslinesFor CDJ's i'd go with a Pioneer

Not for Mixers though, i'd go with an Allen & Heath-they're well built, don't fall apart and the sound quality is top-notch

I used a DJM500 last weekend and i HATED every minute of it-Crackily faders, all the knobs full off etc

The pioneer's rock compared to the 5000's because there belt drive and bit of a joke for the money, wouldn't be so sure about the 3500 comeback though, need to test them as they seem to be meaning business, will be interesting to see if their new .02 pitch resolution is as sturdy as the CDj's, the fact they have a spindle would give great hand's on to dj's more familiar with traditional decks!

Solid CoreAnd double LOL on all the people that say DJM600s have shite sound quality.
Don't believe all the hype about Allen & Heaths.

Pffft, the 600 has awful sound quality - we had one setup alongside a 92 at one of our parties last year because one of the DJs specifically requested one, the moment we swapped over it was audibly noticable that the sound quality was pretty poor compared to the A&H and everyone commented on it - the Pioneer has always been known to have bad sound quality, Vestax, A&H, Urei, Rane etc all sound miles better.

Mixers are so personal really, I've never really got on with Pioneers even though I've played on them thousands of times, just something about them that I don't like - it's like Vestax decks, I just hate the feel of them. In terms of feel I don't think you can go past Vestax mixers, they're so well set out and generally rock solid. A&H's are bombproof, but I hate the faders on them even though they are Penny&Giles ones, technically great, but the dodgy plastic bits and the slight wobble to them - I'll pass thanks. Rane and Urei make the best though, superb sound quality, build quality, layout etc etc

No way, vestax mixers are the WORST. Crap slack faders, worse slippery small eq's. Although I dont scratch so some of these things might be useful to others.
Still crap like.

See, this is what I mean, people look for different things in their mixers - the top end Vestax stuff is fucking gold by any standards, really well built, solid faders, the eq's are pretty small though haha
A&H are generally regarded as bomb proof, but there are differing opinions on that one, same with Pioneer - I think they are built like a soft pack of ciggies and have seen some seriously fucked up ones, but some people swear by them.
Same applies with headphones, carts, decks etc etc etc There is no right or wrong answer really. Except for Kam and Gemini, they can get fucked

Denon vs. Pioneer. It all comes down to user preference. I've pretty much tested and worked with all cd desks and turntables. I prefer and currently own the Pioneer CDJ-1000mk3. Denon 3500 and 5000 blow away the Pioneers when it comes to features. However, when it comes to quality, the Pioneer is a better built machine. Believe me, I put these machines to the test. Why do you think Denon comes out with new machines very often. They are constantly trying to beat Pioneer but are unsuccessful each time. I recommend the Pioneers to you. Yes it costs more but it is worth it in the long run especially if you are keeping them for a long time. If you are still interested in Denon, don't go for the cd decks...Look into the dual decks like the Denon 9000 or the new hd2500.

Well guys, i can say this is really good conversation. lot of ideas will be revised and clear to every one of us who like to be in this DJ world.
For me, i've been living in a place where i dont have much choices, but of the few choices that i have are Denon and Pioneer.
I'm into Electronic music and i'm willing to buy myself a set of players/mixer/effect unit, so actually i'm just looking for opinions.
The big question is Denon S3500 or Pioneer 1000MK3. What about the mixer, which mixer you guys recomend me to go for, and also an effect unit.
i know there are so many brands and so many units out there and if anyone is willing to spend that much amount of $$$$$$$, then he/she will be doing what i'm doing now
.
Thanks alot, Jack.
