just to add some extra confusion to this thread, i'll tackle psytrance:
-"full-on" describes the (mostly) cookie-cutter sound that involves rapid-fire basslines and tired, drugged-out samples. some of it manages to be good, even the major acts like GMS and Alien Project. it's the heaps of imitators that really drag things down. the best full-on comes out of smaller labels IMO, like the ones in the South African scene.
-"goa/classic" is still used to describe stuff that has massive melodies similar to the old tunes by Astral Projection, etc.. not much of this releases these days.
-Finnish/Suomi (i think?) is the really crazy stuff that seems to be weird just to be weird. Some artists like Haltya and the people on Exogenic manage to compromise by making weird AND listenable stuff, while others like Texas Faggot seem to attract only a small, rabid fanbase.
-progressive/"psytekk" is the stuff that has moved away from overt psy techniques while becoming closer to mainstream progressive. IMO the good stuff is some of the best dance music around. emphasis on groovy basslines, percussion, and a generally deep vibe. great to dance to because the constant incremental additions keep you going. check out Son Kite, Ticon, Etnoscope, Blowfish, Shaman, Kooler, etc..
-there's a place where full-on and progressive meet, and you get releases like Prometheus, Hydrophonic, Freq, and Protoculture. this is tied with the prog stuff as my favorite sound in the scene. i guess i consider this to be the modern sound of psytrance, since it embodies everything i like about this style of music.
