How many beats before the bass kicks when producing a tune? Can anyone let me knbow the structure e.g what happens and when, I am in the process of making a tune yet me turntables are being repaired so I cant count the beats on a vinyl to find out. I thought things changed every 64 beats? Can anyone shed any light on this?

No rules really as to when bass kicks in is there, some tracks have it in from beat 1, just do what you feel sounds right to yourself.
As for structuring, most stuff is written round 16 bar sections.

If you tried to mix it with other tunes would that make it harder if everything is all random?

Well obviously, you stick to a 4x4 convention. I started by counting four rows of eight beats in each. 32 beats in what I liked to call a "sector" (hey, I was sixteen.)
But I guess knowing your tunes back to front is what being a DJ is all about! wink

Music Style as long as its kickin'...

This could go the same way as the high hat thread!

Whilst there aren't any set rules, there would still be an unwritten structure using bars...16, 32 64 beats etc...if you dj, when do you cue the record in? It would usually be on the first beat of a new bar...thus hopefully in sync with the bar structure that most dance formulas follow...but having said that, there will always be an exception to the rules...munted

Listen to some favourite tracks, get an idea of structure, use it by all means, but find your own style, rather than bringing the bass in on the 65th, just because matey has done!

Music Style (e) for electro

192 beats is a good place generally... just make sure it drops on a 64... most tunes do, and it keeps it easier, especially if you dont know the track, to drop it correctly.

Im all for doing what you want, just make sure it follows some form of struture.

My thoughts are every 32 beats should vary slightly (variation in melody), larger changes occur every 64 (say a bass drop).

If the middle of the song doesnt follow that structure, no biggie, but start and end should conform a little

Why you counting beats and not bars?

Keep your intros and outros to an even length otherwise you're going to screw every DJ in the land
