Rear ported speakers are fine, just depends how much room you have to set them up properly.

I've got a very old pair of Alesis MK1 passives. Wouldn't mind something a bit more spiffy but I want passives again and will wait till I move rooms.

cheers, for clearing that one up,thumbsup

@ eufex - whats the pro's and cons between active and passive, everyone seems to recomend actives, then someone like yourself (established) has passive.thumbsup

sorry for bugging, but little things like this niggle me, better to be well informed before forking out all that cash, i suppose, cheers.

Mine are so old that's all that was around at the time - they were getting on for £400 when I bought them and another £250-£300 on a power amp. Now Alesis monitor 1s are given away with cornflakes. Reason I'd want passives again is because my amp is relatively new and I'm a tight bastard.

BX 8's..... But like Jay said! You've gotta get use to what your speakers are throughing out and how things sound on them to other speakers.!! If i make a track now i'l burn it to CD and listen to it through shit speakers and systems. Just because, a well produced tune still sounds good thru shit speakers. If your tune sounds shit thru other speakers to your monitors that your using then it's just shit. And you need to have a re-think on how you think your tune should sound.

I've got HHB circle 3 active's and I love them, my only grumble is that because they are so small they are not quite loud enough sometimes but that is not a critisim on the sound. I also have a pair of B&W 602se's which are great hifi speakers but horrible to produce on as they emphasise everything to make it sound as bassey or as bright as possible so when when mixing down on them everything is too bassey and muddy.

I really want a pair of Circle 5 actives now but that will have to wait till after I have bought a dual core cpu (only 23 days left!!!love)

Alesis M1 Active Mk2's think there ace so glad i bought em would recommend them to anyonesmile

Yeah use these too, am luving them at the mo as never had monitors b4, but feel they  lack abit on the mid or mabey theres to much bass i dunno cant really tell, but they have helped me no end and for the price they are wicked biggrin

exactly the same here too - mine tend to be a bit bassy as well

i plugged up one of my bass ports with some cloth and that has worked a treat, no over powering bass at all.thumbsup

I done that with my old Jamo's... worked a treat for mixing on them.!!! I would'nt say very advisable for producing tho. Will give you a false sound i think!!

It's all dependant on where the monitors are positioned & the acoustic treatment you have. In the Alesis manual it gives examples of when to plug up the ports 1 or both to control the bass.

Here's a snippet

The low frequency response of the M1 Active Mk2s can be custom tailored by
plugging the ports. If the speakers must be placed less than one foot from a
front wall, or if they are too close to a corner, then the bass may become
exaggerated and inaccurate. The rules of thumb for these situations are as
follows:

a) less than 1 foot from a front wall but away from any corner: plug one port

b) less than 1 foot from a front wall and a corner: plug both ports

The “plug” can be wad of cloth to completely block the port(s) or a more
porous material like fiberfill which will give less bass attenuation. The bass
output of the M1 Active Mk2 is thus easily variable depending on in-room
positioning and/or personal preference.

I think Dynaudio actually supply port plugs with their monitors, so it's not uncommon.

Music Style does my rig look big in this?
one advantage of active speakers is that I just have 2 wires coming out my mixer straight to the speaker so u cut out an amp and all those cables. much more space
