I used to just record my sets into a Tascam CD burner than master w/ cool edit -  but I heard for the "BEST" sound quality you need to record straight into a PC through a soundcard. So now I'm linking my Pioneer 600 to my Digidesign MBOX to my PC (laptop). Would this be considered the best way to record for most optimal sound quality? How do you guys do it?
what do you record with?

yeah, straight into the computer for me. Don't use protools, though. Reckon most people don't as protools is mega-expensive and requires the protools hardware card which makes it basically un-pirateable and unusable without the hardware.

I thought mixing it from vinyl with the mixer was the only way, unless there's another method i'm not aware of.uhoh

you can always studio mix it with protools and pass it off as a dj set.

dont have the luxery of a computer in the same room as decks so i record onto minidisk.

then if i want to make a cd i have to play the minidisk into the computer!!!!

one advantage is you can check if it sounds ok before burning but is a pain in the asssssssssss!

I use a Mini Disk to record with as my PC is in a different room, I then when I want to put the set on PC I just plug the Mini Disk into the soundcard and re-record it using cool edit pro.

obviously! thumbsdown

i was just responding becuase he asked if there was any other way of recording a set without spinning it.

and there is...... its just not right.

but i have to say that "most" people wouldn't be using Protools to record a DJ set.  its a program that can do much more than record...  ie... mix television shows.

A lot of big name dj's use ProTools to mix commercial cds and also to go back in with post-prod and layer in new kicks, perc, vocals, etc.

A lot.

Yeah Im a minidisk user.

Its fucking annoying the amount of fucking about to get a cd.

However you can track mark before the mix starts and then skip through sets listening to the mixes only.

I will consider getting a cd recorder when they drop below 150 pounds.

Cheers

I mix straight from my Vestax PVC-275 into my sound card(The Sound Blaster® Audigy® 2 ZS Platinum)... but I use Magix Music Maker 2004 Deluxe for recording purposes...any one else use Magix?

Do you need an expensive soundcard to record into soundforge or will standard do? I've got soundforge but don't really use it.

I record onto MD then when i've got a good enough mix record it onto my cd recorder.

Would be interested in recording onto soundforge though, especially if you can master the sound quality

the better the sound card the better the sound quality.  also you're source recording decive has to be good aswell.  ie... good needles, mixer, records, etc.  as the old saying goes, you can't polish shit.

soundforge does have a great deal of tools that can be used to clean up and 'master' as you put it your sound file.  its not the top of the industry for mastering devices but its plenty adequate for what we need to do with a dj mix.
