Quick question for all you that play out MP3s .. I know a .wav file is best, but if you can't get your hands on one, what's the lowest quality of mp3 you can play out and still have it sound quality? Does 320 kbps cut it on big rigs?

Apparantly 192 is fine but i'm not too technical about it all, just repeating what i was told by a few people who i was sending my track over MSN to, to play out..

Also trackitdown.net are mainly in 192kbps and they say that it is fine for playing out too.

Mp3's at any bitrate are not going to sound as good as full quality wav at 44.1/16. So the higher the better, just might sound a tad quiet.

192 : you dont get quality 14k -16k eq range . i check the graphic eq in winamp and those ranges dont even move , making your track sound not so clear

yeah, you could maybe fool some people with a 192, but i'd say 320 or bust. Big systems bring out the flaws more than shitty everyday speakers...unless you're playing them on a really bad system

192kb/sec mp3s only lose frequencies inaudiable to the human hearing apparantly... so by that theory, its technically the same quality as a cd is it not?

Dosn't quiet work like that. The basics of mp3's (and whole bunch of other compressions including minidisc) is called  'psyco-acoustics'. Put basically, its a way of tricking the mind into hearing things that it isn't (confused yet?), and thus saving data. Part of that is removing parts of the sound which the program believes the human ear cannot hear. I could go on about this for pages...

^ Hehe ..

So it seems the verdict is 320kbps is fine & 192kbps  runs the chance of sounding a bit dodgey dependending on the track. Thanks for the info thumbsup

Yeah basically. I tend to find high compression commerical music usually sounds okay on mp3. It really depends on the source. Flatness can also come from the digital process too (here we go....).

like has been said, it's an algorithm that tries to take out stuff you won't miss. I find that with mp3s the high end aliasing sounds garbled and warbly, if that makes any sense. Like looking through plastic wrap rather than glass... it's not quite as well defined. Harshes out when it's really loud too.

On my home speakers (relatively good), a mp3 at any bit rate is instantly apparent... on a club system, i'd go 320 kps unless it's a real nice system, in which case I'd do my utmost to get a .wav rip.    Have you looked into ogg vorbis?

when its a tune i've been working on, and i've heard it to death - its amazing how obvious the difference is between 128 and 192 listening to the track (in 128 the hi frequencies just sound really flat)

don't notice much difference between 192 and 320, but i dunno how much that would change over a PA
