Coldcut’s
‘70 Minutes Of Madness’ mix was released in 1995. Mention this to any
DJ or mix aficionado worth their salt, and they will probably tell you
that it still stands as a near-perfect example of everything that a DJ
mix should be; an eclectic selection of tracks, mind-bending mix
techniques (from a time before the advent of the laptop DJ), and an
emphasis on making everything fit together nicely (if it’s all new to
you, clue yourself up here).
Well over 10 years on from it’s original release, it’s footprints
continue to be felt in the work of the best DJs from all over the map.
One of those DJs standing loud and proud is ZILLA.
One Foot In The Fire, One Fist In The Air (2005) was ZILLA’s solo follow-up to the widely acclaimed A Friendly Game Of Chess mix, which was masterminded along with co-conspirator Buddy Peace. OFITFOFITA is the logical progression from Coldcut’s lasting legacy in 70 Minutes Of Madness.
With the added benefit of cheaper/more accessible technology, the
possibilities for the modern DJ are endless, and ZILLA certainly takes
the baton and runs with it. Quite how 73 tracks can be wedged into as
many minutes and not sound like a cat stuck in a washing
machine is a mystery, but this is no mere numbers game - there is a
definite flow to proceedings as each track drifts in and out, and the
time and effort taken to craft it all together certainly shines
through. Haunting voices, distant beats and Britney Spears (no, really)
all combine to make for a mix that is very much of the other-world. Put
it on and drift away..
