i just finished a dj mix that i'm happy with BUT before I release it I'de like to put it through some COMPRESSER's and/or 4 BAND EQ's or whatever it is big name Dj's's or Producers use to give it that Crisp, Clear, "proffesional sound".  I wish i could explain it better, I guess the best example would be the new "Daley - What's in a Name ?" mix.. he's got that real - y'know, "CRISPY" sound? ANYWAYS, I got Pro-Tools and Cool Edit but I don't know what Compresser/EQ Parameters I would use to get that CRISPY type of sound.. Can someone PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS?uhoh

PRO TOOLS AUDIOSUITE:

COMPRESSION SETTING: (Fill In The Blank)

Gain:____db

Threshold:____db

Ratio:___

Attack:____ms

Release:____ms

Knee:____

4 BAND EQ SETTING: (Fill In the Blank)

Input: ___db

---{   Gain=___db; Freq=___Khz

--O-- Gain=___db; Freq=___Khz; Q=___

--O-- Gain=___db; Freq=___Khz; Q=___

}---  Gain=___db; Freq=___Khz

Any other tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated, much thanks.

if you are using soundforge

Normalize using levels from another selection or file

  1. Select the data you want to use to normalize your data.

  2. From the Process menu, choose Normalize.

  3. Click the Scan Levels button.

  4. Close the Normalize dialog.

  5. Select the data you want to normalize.

  6. From the Process menu, choose Normalize.

  7. Select the Use current scan level check box.

  8. Click the OK button. The selection is normalized to the level displayed in the Peak or RMS fields without rescanning.

Mate if it was easy as that we'd all be engineers. Honestly if you don't know what you're doing it's best left alone thumbsup

It really dosn't work like that, like said above if it was that easy...

It depends on the mix, compression and eq are there to correct unique problems.

I've always been under the impression that if you set your levels right when you record the mix, you shouldn't need to mess about with it afterwards?

All commerical compo cd's have pro-mastering, just makes things sound a bit tighter (espically when you bare in mind the poor systems it might get played on), its not a major issue though. But for your average mix cd, I don't really see the need.

When i've booked people off the back of demo cd's, its from the quality of there mixing and the tunes they choose. The sound quality of it dosn't really come into it, unless its unlistenable (which funily enough usually comes from bad mastering).

Good points. I'm just gonna stick with it the way it is, no need taking away from the sound quality. thanks for the advice i was really conflicted.
