Why has this suddenly become so popular within the Hard Dance scene?? We've got Lisa Lashes and Anne Savage both playing breaks sets these days and people now claim to love breaks when about a year ago most people though it was shit DnB - whats the dillyo??

PS. I'm kinda grumpy that people have jumped on this new bandwagon and that people like Lashes and Savage are getting breaks sets over breaks DJs because they are more global grrr

PPS. This obviously doesn't apply to those who were playing and listening to breaks before this huge explosion of interest, funnily enough though none of the clubs have cottoned onto this.....funky house is still the main backroom genre of choice rolleyes

Not at breaks events though, she's been running her own back room recently with her playing breaks, but she has NOT been playing at proper breaks nights - festivals are now booking her over established breaks DJs because she'll pull a crowd and she has big knockers - at DV the crowd totally changed when she came on to play, total exodus of those listening to Aquasky and a huge influx of people who obviously have no idea thumbsup

I've been waiting for someone to post about this --> I'm still undecided about what the general consensus is on these boards.

In my case, I've been listening to breaks for a long time now (being that there are quite a few breaks DJ who play on my site,) but I've only jumped on the bangwagon in relation to playing breaks in the last six months and solely concentrating on it in the last two.

In relation to the funky house backroom comment -- if it's appropriate, you can have both styles complementing each other nicely I find. thumbsup

I decidede to change styles, perhaps it was a case of the Jon Daniels-itis biggrin...

But being serious for a moment. I still love my trance / hard dance, just need a bit of a change for a while and breaks was there.

I look at it this way --

Trance :: get munted all night and have a fucking ball! dunce

Breaks :: Chill out after the big night with a beer in one hand, record in the other, mixing under the sun! wink

Of course, this is not to say I can't enjoy breaks when I'm out getting munted! laughing

Pretty standard stuff, at DV she played some right shockers but then dropped a Backdraft tune so she's obviously has some taste......not much though, the rest of it was really limp thumbsdown

Jon - I understand what your saying about Lashes. But you really can't be shocked when one style of music suddenly starts to become more popular! Trance/HH/HT/Garage - They've all done it, just seems to be the turn of breaks.

I'm the same as Clay.. I've been listening to breaks for years,  just couldn't afford to buy any (You can thank the shit HH Hoover revolution for freeing up some capital) Now I'm playing more breaks sets than anything else - lol!

No, can't be shocked about something becoming popular and I'm not, it's just that its suddenly become popular with the Hard Dance crowd specifically! Thats what is bothering me, I don't want breaks to get dragged down with it just because the DJs have decided that Breaks are cool and that they should start playing it - I mean, how credible can a genre of music be when Lashes is playing it thumbsdown

Thats true too, it's mine - you can't 'ave it :tounge:

It's the same with what happened to techno, the techno heads hated it when Hard House lovers jumped on the techno bandwagon - same applies here!

I must say there was a big movement for hardstyle in the Sydney scene. But it's also becoming quite a trend to get sick of it... The sonds of uplifting trance and tech are really being pushed in the last few months.

I'm still loving the breaks though! thumbsup

Music Style Lots!

I had decided to draw the line at breaks ages ago, (more an expense thing than anything) but was going thru a mate's tunes he was selling and came across a few choice breaks, bought em for fuckall, and discovered I love mixing breaks!  Great fun!  I prolly won't ever market myself as a breaks DJ, but now just buy the odd one or two if I really like em, and have fun mixing em! biggrin

Ironically, I am ATM listening to a mixxy I did a few weeks ago which goes from piano house to breaks to DnB .... am listening to the breaks as I type....

I don't really like this bandwagon jumping tho, one of the reasons I wouldn't market myself as a breaks DJ is that there are so many shit hot breaks jox out there, and it is they who should be getting the exposure thumbsup whereas I only play about with them really

Oh, and really truly, you need to be able to scratch to mix breaks well IMO.  I did a couple of little scratchies in my mix, really really basic, but I could hear in my head what I wanted to do and just don't have the skill to do it - leave it to the boys n gals that can, I say!

Not sure about the scratching thing, far too many Breaks Djs out there who can't scratch for shit - THOUGH if you can can beat scratch to a certain extent it will help ala Bushwacka!

The best breaks DJ around is Krafty Kuts, to be honest he is one of the most talented DJs in the world in my opinion, some of the shit he can do with records is fantastic!!

Going to upload one of his Superchunk Hip-Hop mixes which is pure gold, live bootlegging with every single tune played using accapella's and inventive mixing - fucking superb!!

I know what you mean there Cat. I find breaks to be like tech in quite a few ways (not all, each to their own.)
Breaks can give you a gerat oppurtunity to stretch out your mixing legs so to speak, and yeah, I really enjoy mixing, because it's fun!!
Instead of scratching I really like to cut, stab and also give a good juggle (not really apparent on my mix because I wanted to real clean mix CD, although there is the odd one or two.) I think you really need to use your records as tools to create the best sound you're after, not just play straight tracks one after another. Breaks can give you freedom to drop a tune half way in, and make it sound right, especially if it's a solid breakdown mix thumbsup
Although, with the more progressive breaks, being smooth is the key for mine! A nice clean mix across with no noticable transisions is very effective (as long as it's not boring!)
I'm not saying, I'm right or wrong here, just how I see it, and my opinion... thumbsup

And Cat, why haven't you torn the shreads out of it yet?!?!? laughingbiggrin
