Indeed, very interesting thread! Glad it got resurrected, here's my two pence worth...
I got into breaks during the heyday of the Chemical Brothers and the whole trip-hop explosion around 1995 and was really inspired by a lot of J Saul Kane's early work back in the day; anyone remember Depth Charge - "Nine Deadly Venoms" album or any of his early techno stuff as Eon, like "Fear: The Mindkiller"? I've pretty much srayed with breaks in form or another for the same reason thats been mentioned already - an alternative to mixing banging techno and acid, as mixing any style can get dull after a while.
Recently I've definitely been getting into the whole rinsing drum n bass / old skool hardcore style stuff from Quest, Mutiny, Breakfastaz, Distortionz, Shimano et al, but I still love and buy the funky end of things too when I can - anyone heard the Plumps new single "Soul Vibrate"? It's a funky acid breaks monster!!
Another act who I think has been majorly overlooked is Son Of The Electric Ghost from Texas, USA - his label Bless Records is pioneering a hard, edit laden electro influenced breaks sound that is fast and furious without relying on drum n bass sounds to keep it kicking - I've also heard that his live PA is amazing, would dearly love to book him for Ape-x if he's ever in the UK...
Finally, I thought I'd drop a minor plug too - I've uploaded a 40 minute recording of my last set in the breaks/drum n bass room at Redtrip at the Telegraph in Brixton; it's mostly the hard london sound so plenty of bassline drops and hoovers and old skool vibes - hope you like it, here's the link:
