I been going at the Reason everday for a little while now. My basslines keep clipping out. Why does this happen and how can I fix it?

try turning down your gains if your bassline clips solo.if it clips while other tracks are playing play with eq'ing the other parts sub frequencies out

yea man... the levels of your bassline are probably just too loud...

if turning it down means its too quiet in the mix, try some compression, or bringing your mix down to suit... and make sure your bass is mono'd...

The usual cause of clipping is to much of one frequency try rolling off some of the low end

Should'nt use them for lowering volume in a mix i don't think. Yeh there used for radio with fluctuating volumes but you want your compressor taking care of that in digital audio production. Don't wanna preach but thats bad practice. Get it right in the mix without touching the limiter and when you come to use it at the end (via routing the channel to it or simply putting it last in the effect chain) will bring your track to life and make a good mix great. Keep your bass in the ball park of - 8 and - 6db in the mixer channel. Remember kick and bass are most likely to be the loudest thing in your track so you wanna sculpt other sounds round it and round it's volume. Remember to check the volume in the actual fx chain. Make sure your not boosting 2 much in eq or compression. Check the output volume of each effect insert. There's no substitute for a good monitoring plug in either. I'm loving Roger Nichols Multimeter at the minute. Preffer it to the waves Paz Analyzer. But what you use is down to personnal taste and what you find easier to understand.

u can lower ur signal than maximise it.

prevents clipping.

but eqing out the right freq can help this toobiggrin

totally disagree about monoing bass considering most plugs these days are primarily in stereo, mono where possible but defo isnt a must!!!

I may be wrong but I always thought that making your bass mono, was mainly for tunes going to vinyl as it made cutting them easier?

For dance music monoing your bass is advised as you want to have the same sound coming out of both speakers... most of your drums should be mono too...

Dan, you should always have a clean signal (not clipping) before and after an effect, if you have a sound clipping but just put a limiter on it then yes it will not be clipping on the channel to look at, but you will just be squashing the sound down to 0db clipping and all, so in essence it is still there...thumbsup

yes and no...yes it was the case as i had a record Vinyl cutting machine and had to multiband compress and mono below a certain frequency.

Some clubs were mono too so a mono bass had more power..... I tried this and it works, mixed stereo and mono works too when layering depending on the bass, i usually mono'd the lower sub and kick.

try it and see...there might not be much in it these days with powerful VST FX, but when we used to have just a basic compressor and the sound from a desk it worked. rolleyes

My recent tracks i DIDNT mono the bass and loss some of the impact...so had to mess with them a lot to get the required sound...all a good learning curve in the new days of engineering uhohsmilethumbsup

So, no, it isnt a must do to mono, its just a tip that worked but you might have your own methods. biggrin

I was looking all over the program and it was probably right in front of my face, but how do I set the bass to mono?

i can see the woofers of my speakers and if a bass clips i can see if its an inaudible sub frequency from the speakers, if u get what i'm on about... i always eq either just the bass or the eintire tune to remove all frequencies below around 25Hz. on a huge soundsystem u'll feel the effects of low frequencies but for mastering they can be a cunt. same goes for high freq's at 16kHz +
