I took my MKIII's apart to replace the platter a while ago. Wasn't TOO bad.Just take it really slow and easy and make sure you do it on a clear table/desk so you don't loose any screws as they drop out!

As for £1,000 for a car, I'd go for something German or Japanese. My Mum used to work in market reesarch and the Jap cars always came out tops for reliability. But you can't beat German engineering.
